Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- John Williams' suicide squeeze in the bottom of the eighth plated Izaak Silva with the go-ahead run, while Spencer Koopmans and Zach Stone combined on a five-hitter, lifting UC Davis to a 4-3 victory over Pacific in the opener of a three-game non-conference series on Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The Aggies won their third straight Friday opener, improving to 23-16-1 overall on the year and matching their win total from all of last season (23-31). The Tigers dropped their third straight, falling to 9-30 overall.

Silva opened the UC Davis rally with a booming triple to right field, extending his hitting streak to 10 games, and was still there after Johnson induced a ground ball out to the shortstop with the infield in. Cameron Olson was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners for Williams, who laid down a bunt to the right side on the second pitch he saw from Taylor Johnson (0-1) to bring home a sprinting Silva for the lead.

Sophomore right-hander Zach Stone came on to close it out, handling a high chopper back to the mound for the first out and, following a walk, Silva gunned down pinch runner Jimmy Boras trying to take second for out number two. Stone then locked down his eighth save of the year by striking out Justin Thaxton to end the game.

Koopmans (5-3) earned his third straight win, allowing just one earned run on five hits and tied a season high with six strikeouts. The senior right-hander has allowed just three earned on 14 hits, posting a 1.23 ERA over his last 22 innings.

Johnson suffered the loss, coming on to start the eighth and giving up a run on a hit while walking one. Starter Jake Jenkins took the no-decision, allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out two.

An RBI double by Jed Sprague in the second staked the Tigers to the early lead, but the Aggies responded with a pair in the home half. Austin March dropped a one-out single into right field and scored when Olson sliced a triple to right center to tie the game. After a strikeout, Williams bounced a ball into the hole at short and beat out the throw to plate Olson and make it 2-1.

The wheels came off in the third as back-to-back errors allowed a pair to score for Pacific, and the Tigers held off the Aggies, stranding a pair in scoring position over the next three innings to hang on to the lead. UC Davis was finally able to cash in the tying run in the sixth as Nick Lynch led-off with his 22nd double of the year, moved to third on a ground ball to the right side, and scored on Austin March's sacrifice fly to left.

Olson and Tino Lipson each finished with a pair of hits to pace the Aggies' offense, which collected double-digit hits (10) for the sixth consecutive game, while the defense, despite two errors, came up big with a season-high four double plays.

The series now shifts to Stockton and Klein Family Field for the final two games of the series, as senior right-hander Raul Jacobson is scheduled to take the mound for game two on Saturday (April 25) at 6 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Lynch's double in the sixth was his 22nd of the year, tying him with Daniel Descalso (2007) for second on the single-season list... Stone's eight saves this season are tied for third on the single-season list, just one back of his total from his freshman year for second on the chart, while his 17 career saves are just two shy of Justin Fitzgerald's career mark of 19 set from 2005-08... Silva's 10-game hitting streak is the second-longest of the season for an Aggie hitter, trailing Lipson's 13-game streak from March 7-April 3... With his single in the 3rd, Tanner Bily has now reached base safely in each of his last 23 games (17 of those via a hit)... The six straight games with double-digit hits is the longest streak for UC Davis since a six-game run from March 7-15 last season... The start was Koopmans' fifth "quality start" this season, tying Jacobson for the team lead... With his two hits, Lipson logged his team-best 18th multi-hit game of the year.
