Wong, Chen go low as Aggies increaes Big West lead

EL MACERO, Calif. - Andrea Wong capitalized on six birdies for a 4-under 68 and the 36-hole lead on Monday, and Betty Chen backed that up with a bogey-free 69, as the five-time defending No. 22 UC Davis women's golf team opened a 12-shot lead with one round to play at the Big West Championships at El Macero Country Club.

The Aggies are dominating the player leaderboard with its top four scorers among the top five places and its entire team in the top 20. Wong is 5 under and has a one-shot lead over Raquel Elk of Hawai'i while Blair Lewis is 1 under and in fourth. Chen and Paige Lee are each even and tied for fifth, while Beverly Vatananugulkit is 9 over and tied for 19th.

A day after shooting par-288 for a three-stroke lead over Hawai'i, UC Davis fired a 7-under 281 team score behind the play of Wong, Chen and Lee, who added a 2-under 70. Vatananugulkit had a 74 while Lewis, the first-day leader, shot 75.

Hawai'i (+5) is in second while UC Riverside (+24), Long Beach State (+29), Cal Poly (+32), Cal State Fullerton (+36), UC Irvine (+38) and CSUN (+46) round out the standings.

Wong got off to a hot start, picking up birdies on three of her first five holes to help her go 3 under early in her round. She used three more to get to 5 under after 15 holes before a late bogey brought her home with a 68. Chen's solid round had three birdies -- two of them on par-3 holes -- and 15 pars. She was 3 under after 12 holes before closing with six consecutive pars.

Lee had a bogey-free front nine while make her turn two shots in the red. Two bogeys evened her score but then birdies on the par-5 15th and 18th holes got her back under par for a round of 70. Vatananugulkit cut five strokes from her opening-round 79 thanks to a strong effort that featured 1-over scores on both the front and back nines. Lewis used eight pars and a birdie to make her turn 1 under before carding a 75 overall.

The Aggies currently have the second-longest championship winning streak in Big West history with five consecutive titles. San Jose State won 10 straight between 1987-96.

The Big West champion receives an automatic berth to the upcoming NCAA Regionals.

Teams will begin Wednesday's final round at 7:30 a.m. UC Davis will play with Hawai'i and UC Riverside beginning at 9 a.m.
