EL MACERO, Calif. - Senior Blair Lewis shot a career-best 4-under 68 on Sunday and is in first place while Andrea Wong fired a 71 to help No. 22 UC Davis take a three-shot lead after the first round of the Big West Women's Golf Championships at El Macero Country Club
The top-seeded Aggies shot par-288 on their home course and lead Hawai'i which shot 291. Cal Poly (293) is in third and is followed by UC Riverside (299), Long Beach State (304), CSUN (307) Cal State Fullerton (313) and UC Irvine (313). UC Davis is trying for its sixth straight Big West Championship and the accompanying automatic berth to the upcoming NCAA Regionals.
Lewis and Wong paced the Aggies, who also got a 74 from sophomore Paige Lee, a 75 from junior Betty Chen and a 79 from senior Beverly Vatananugulkit.
Lewis, whose previous low round as an Aggie was a 70 during the second round of the 2013 NCAA West Regional, opened Sunday with a bogey on the par-4 first hole but then birdied the second, fifth and eighth holes to make her turn two shots under par. She added three more birdies on the back, including back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, to come in with a 68.
She holds a two-shot lead over Nichole Cruz of Hawai'i and is up three on Savannah Vilaubi of UC Riverside, Sophie Bergland of Cal Poly and Wong. Only five golfers in the 40-player field broke par on the first day.
Wong had two early birdies to move a pair of shots under par after seven holes before two bogeys brought her back to even. She birdied the par-5 15th and 18th holes to finish with a 71. Lee birdied the par-4 ninth hole to help counter three bogeys on her front nine before carding nine straight pars to cover the back.
Chen had four birdies, including three on the back, while Vatananugulkit had one on the par-4 14th hole to help highlight her round.
El Macero Country Club is hosting the Big West Championships for the first time and the course is in pristine condition for the tournament.
The teams will play the second round on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. UC Davis will begin teeing off at 10:30 and will play with Hawai'i and Cal Poly.
