IRVINE, Calif. -- A three-run fourth inning erased a two-run deficit for host UC Irvine, and the No. 19 Anteaters stranded 11 UC Davis baserunners on the day, rallying to win the series with a 6-3 victory over the Aggies in the finale on Sunday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark.
Despite collecting 10 hits -- four of those going for extra bases -- UC Davis fell to 21-16-1 overall and 5-7 in Big West Conference action. UC Irvine improved to 23-13 and 10-2 with the win.
Senior Nick Lynch finished with a game-high three hits, while Tino Lipson was 2-for-5 with a double, notching his fourth consecutive multi-hit game. The Aggies had double-digit hits for the fourth consecutive game and the 19th time this season.
Senior Izaak Silva, who also finished with a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to a team-high eight games, led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on Austin March's single in the very next at-bat for a 1-0 lead. March was then sacrificed to second, stole third, and scored when interference was called on Alex Aguiar's fielder's choice for a 2-0 advantage.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Anteaters took advantage of a bit of wildness by starter Max Cordy (7-2) with one out to rally back. Cameron Bishop and Jerry McClanahan drew walks, and Kris Paulino brought home UCI's first run with a double to left-center to make it 2-1. A run-scoring single by Cole Kreuter and a wild pitch later in the inning scored another as the Anteaters erased the gap to take a 3-2 lead.
UC Davis tried to bounce back, putting runners in scoring position in four of the final five innings, including the bases loaded in the eighth when the Aggies could come away with only one run on an error, but could not find the tying run. The Anteaters, who stranded seven UC Davis baserunners in scoring position defensively, added single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, to cap the scoring.
Cordy suffered the loss, charged with three runs on three hits while walking six in 3.1 innings of work. Evan Manarino (4-1) earned the win, allowing just one earned on eight hits while striking out eight over seven innings, while Bishop nailed down his first save of the year by allowing just two hits and striking out three over the final two innings.
Junior Tanner Bily, who doubled in the third and walked in the seventh, reached base safely for the 21st consecutive game -- 15 of those via a hit -- to tie teammate Austin March for the longest by an Aggie hitter this season. March opened the year with a 21-game run, 16 of those with hits.
UC Davis takes a break from Big West play next week, hosting San Jose State in a non-conference mid-week clash on Tuesday (April 21) at 2:30 p.m., before taking on former league rival Pacific in a three-game series beginning on Friday (April 24) at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium. The scene shifts to Klein Family Field in Stockton for the final two games on Saturday (April 25) at 6 p.m. and Sunday (April 26) at 2 p.m.
