DAVIS, Calif. -- After a wild scoring binge to start the game for the second consecutive day, visiting Cal State Fullerton took advantage of a pair of errors to key a four-run third inning, erasing a one-run deficit and lifting the Titans to a 13-3 victory over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Dobbins Stadium.
The Aggies, who won their first-ever game at home against Fullerton with Friday's 3-2 victory, fell to 20-13-1 overall and 4-5 in league play. The Titans, who have not lost a series to UC Davis in the history between the programs, improved to 19-15 overall and 6-3 in league play.
Six different Aggie hitters finished with hits on the day, including Izaak Silva's first career home run to highlight a three-run first inning and a double by John Williams in the seventh.
Much like Saturday's game that saw the two teams combine for 11 runs in the first three innings, Sunday's contest picked up right where they left off. Fullerton got on the board first with a pair of runs on RBI singles by David Olmedo-Barrera and Scott Hurst for a 2-0 lead, but the advantage was short-lived.
Silva's one-out moon shot over the wall in left field off starter John Gavin (5-1) opened the scoring for the Aggies. Nick Lynch and Austin March followed with infield hits, and runners were at the corners when the ball was thrown away on March's bunt. A wild pitch plated Lynch to make it 3-2, and UC Davis continued to pour it on as Tino Lipson drew a walk and Tanner Bily was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Freshman Alex Aguiar then lofted the second pitch he saw from Gavin deep to the track in left, scoring March from third and giving the Aggies the lead, 3-2.
After both teams went quietly in the second, the Titans broke the game open in the decisive third, helped out by two errors in the frame. Olmedo-Barrera had an RBI double to tie the game, scoring Josh Estill, who was safe at first on a throwing error.
Hurst added an RBI single, and Tyler Stieb plated two more later in the inning thanks to a throwing error on a fielder's choice that should have been the third out.
Fullerton added a run in the fifth, two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and three more in the ninth, to cap the scoring. Hurst (4-for-4, two runs, two RBI) and Olmedo-Barrera (3-for-4, three runs) helped power a 14-hit attach for the Titans, who had nine different players tally hits.
Previously unbeaten Max Cordy (7-1), who was moved into the weekend rotation after Orlando Razo went down with an injury, suffered his first loss of the year, allowing four earned on six hits while striking out three in four innings.
Gavin allowed the three runs on four hits in five innings before giving way to the bullpen, which allowed just two hits the rest of the way, striking out four.
UC Davis closes out a five-game homestand on Tuesday (April 14), welcoming San Francisco to Dobbins Stadium for a midweek clash. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The Aggies won the previous meeting between the two, shutting out the Dons, 1-0, at Benedetti Diamond back on March 24.
