DALLAS, Texas - Sophomore Paige Lee had a bogey-free 4-under 68 in the second round and is tied for second as the No. 24 UC Davis women's golf team, which has three other players in the top 20, is in second place after two rounds on Friday at the SMU/DAC Invitational.
Andrea Wong and Betty Chen are both 4 over and tied for 13th while senior Beverly Vatananugulkit is one shot back of them and tied for 17th. Senior Blair Lewis is just outside the top 20, tied for 22nd at 6 over.
UC Davis opened the two-day tournament with a 10-over 298 team score in the morning before hitting par with a 288 in the afternoon. The Aggies are 10 over after 36 holes. They were the only team to score at least par on Friday along with leader Oklahoma State, ranked 14th, which is 3 over and holds a seven-shot lead over UC Davis. OSU had a 2-under 286 in the afternoon.
Half of the 16-team field is ranked among the top 50 by Golfstat and four of them occupy the top four spots in the team standings. Purdue, ranked 37th, is 16 over and six shots back of the Aggies in third while No. 40 Texas Tech is 18 over and in fourth place.
Purdue's Aurora Kan had rounds of 71-70 and is 3 under to hold down first place among all players. Lee, who opened with a 75, is tied with Emma Broze of Oklahoma State who went 72-71 over the first 36 holes.
Lee was 2 under on both sides of the Dallas Athletic Club's 6,345-yard course, picking up back-to-back birdies on the par-3 fifth and par-4 fourth holes before bookending birdies on the 10th and 18th holes on the back nine. She added 14 pars during her impressive 4-under round. Lee, who finished second behind Wong during the Aggies' victory at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Hawaii last month, had four birdies, seven pars and seven bogeys in the first round.
Wong strung together three birdies on the par-4 10th, par-5 11th and par-4 12th holes to open her back nine while closing with a 1-under 36. She shot 75 in the afternoon, highlighting her round with a birdie and 14 pars. Chen shot 74 in each round, shooting par on her front in the first round and par on the back nine in the second.
Vatananugulkit provided UC Davis its second-best score of the day with her second-round 72 which featured a 1-under back nine fueled by three birdies. She was just 1 over on the course's front nine during her opening-round 77. Lewis had 76 in the first round but then shot 74 in the second while collecting an eagle on the 11th hole. She had two birdies in the round.
UC Davis will finish the tournament with a shotgun round on Saturday that begins at 6 a.m. (PDT). The Aggies will play with Oklahoma State and Purdue.
