Big inning lifts Redhawks past Aggies in opener

Box Score

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Host Seattle sent 12 batters to the plate as part of a seven-run seventh inning, breaking a 1-1 tie and helping lift the Redhawks to an 8-3 victory in the opener of a three-game series on Friday evening at Bannerwood Park.

Seniors Kevin Barker and Izaak Silva each finished with two hits for the Aggies, who fell to 8-6-1 overall with the loss. Seattle, which overcame three errors, improved to 5-9 overall, winning for the third straight time in the series.

Barker was the catalyst to get UC Davis on the board with a run in the first, leading off with an infield single, moving to second on a Tino Lipson sacrifice, and swiping third for his 13th stolen base of the year. That brought by classmate Nick Lynch, whose ground ball to the right side plated Barker for the 1-0 lead.

Senior right-hander Spencer Koopmans (1-2) started strong, posting zeros through the first four innings and scattering only three hits until the Redhawks finally got to him in the fifth to tie the game. Brock Carpenter reached on an error to lead-off the inning, eventually scoring two batters later on a sac fly by Colin Peterson to make it 1-1.

Both teams went quietly in the sixth and Seattle snuffed a UC Davis rally in the seventh, stranding the bases loaded full of Aggies, before exploding for its big inning. A single and a walk with one out chased Koopmans from the game in favor of Max Cordy, who got a ground ball for the second out before a wild pitch plated pinch-runner Dalton Hurd with the go-ahead run.

Two more walks loaded the bases for Griffin Andreychuk, whose two-run single through the right side opened the floodgates. Three more run-scoring singles in the inning upped the Redhawks' lead to 8-1 and they never looked back.

UC Davis attempted a rally in its final two at-bats, but could manage only single runs in the eight and ninth for the final score. Freshman Alex Aguiar had a two-out RBI single that scored Lynch in the eighth before the Aggies left the bases loaded for a second time, and Austin March added an RBI double in the ninth to score Lipson for UC Davis' final run.

In all, the Aggies stranded 11 runners on base for the game -- eight of those in scoring position.

Will Dennis (3-1) earned the victory for Seattle, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out six over seven innings. In the loss, Koopmans allowed just two earned on four hits and struck out four over 6 1/3 innings of work.

Barker collected his fifth multi-hit game of the year, extending his hitting streak to six consecutive games, while Silva's 2-for-4 effort was his third of the season. March's ninth-inning double and Lynch's single in the sixth allowed them to reach base safely for the 15th and 13th consecutive games, respectively.

The Aggies also stole three bases in five attempts on the night, extending their nation-leading total to 50-for-63 for the year.

Game two of the series begins on Saturday at 2 p.m., with sophomore left-hander Orlando Razo scheduled to face right-hander Skyler Genger.
