DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior catcher Izaak Silva finished 3-for-5 with three runs driven in to help lead a 12-hit attack and UC Davis broke open a one-run game with a pair of four-run innings, lifting the host Aggies to their seventh consecutive victory, 11-2, over Saint Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
UC Davis improved to 18-7-1 overall, winning its third straight in the series and extending the second-longest winning streak in the program's Division I history, standing behind only an eight-game winning streak from March 9-25, 2008.
The Gaels fell to 18-11 overall with the defeat, despite collecting 10 hits on the day -- three of those off the bat of Zach Kirtley.
"I was a little concerned about this game today," Head Coach Matt Vaughn said. "We're leaving for Hawai'i in the morning, we're going to be there for five days, this is the first week of school for the guys, and I was a little worried about us overlooking this game and looking ahead to the weekend, but I warned them about it on Sunday, we had a good day off yesterday, and they came out and played ball today."
Junior right-hander Max Cordy (6-0) was credited with the win on the designated staff day, striking out four in a pre-determined three-inning start, scattering six hits and allowing single runs in the first and second innings. His six wins are the most for an Aggie pitcher since Dayne Quist finished 6-3 in 13 appearances back in 2012.
The Aggies' bullpen then locked down the Saint Mary's bats, as Nat Hamby, Justin Mullins, Spencer Henderson, and Cameron Law, combined for six shutout innings in relief, allowing just four hits and striking out five.
Wes Malik (2-1) took the loss for the Gaels, allowing three runs on four hits after facing only eight batters over an inning-plus.
Three straight two-out hits put Saint Mary's on the scoreboard first in the opening inning, but the deficit was quickly erased in the home half as a two-out double by Nick Lynch, who scored three times on Tuesday, set the stage for Silva's RBI single two batters later to tie the game. The Aggies then took the lead for good when Austin March, who was hit by a pitch and moved all the way to third on Silva's single, swiped home on a double steal to make it 2-1.
A run-scoring ground ball by Tanner Bily made it 3-1 in the second, but the Gaels quickly got the run back in the third as back-to-back singles by Matt Toscano and Connor Hornsby, a sacrifice, and a walk, loaded the bases for Kirtley, who singled through the right side, cutting the deficit back to a single run.
Cordy worked out of the jam, striking out Logan Steinberg and getting Anthony Gonsolin to cue a ball right in front of the plate, which was picked up by Silva in time to get the out at the plate and end the inning.
The Aggie bats then exploded in the third, sending nine batters to the plate, scoring four times on three hits. UC Davis loaded the bases with one out, scoring its first run on a wild pitch, and getting RBI hits by John Williams (two-run double) and Brad Pluschkell (RBI triple) to make it 7-2 and put the game out of reach.
Nine more batters came to the plate in the sixth as the Aggies loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of infield singles to bring up Lynch, who was hit by a 1-0 pitch to drive home a run. Silva added a two-run single through the left side two batters later and Alex Aguiar lifted a deep fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly and an 11-2 advantage.
Senior Tino Lipson finished 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, while Williams also added two hits to increase his hit streak to seven. Eight of the nine Aggie starters finished with hits as UC Davis reached double digits in that category for the fourth straight contest and the 13th time overall this season.
"We saw good pitching this past weekend, we're going to see really good pitchers going forward," Vaughn said. "When you have those opportunities and you're able to keep pressure on people, which is what we've been able to do all year long, that's definitely a benefit. Is it sustainable? Is it going to happen the next 30 games? Probably not, but we're going to keep trying to make it happen."
The Aggies return to Big West Conference play this weekend with a four-game series at Hawai'i beginning on Thursday (April 2) at 6:35 p.m. HT at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu. The series runs through Sunday (April 5), but only the first three games will count toward the conference standings.
