Aggies swamp Highlanders to complete sweep

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior right-hander Raul Jacobson struck out eight over seven innings of work and was backed by 17 hits from the offense as UC Davis finished off a sweep of UC Riverside with a 13-1 victory in Sunday's series finale at Dobbins Stadium.

The win extended the Aggies' winning streak to six games as they improved to 17-7-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Big West Conference play. The streak is the longest by a UC Davis team since 2011 while posting its first series sweep of a conference opponent since the Aggies took three from the Highlanders in 2013.

"After yesterday's game, I talked to the team about the season to this point about the opportunity that was ahead of them, and how it was a chance for someone to step up and do something," Head Coach Matt Vaughn said. "Yesterday's game was the kind of game where you could easily come out on Sunday and flop. It's emotional, whether you win or lose that game, and I didn't want us to think, 'Hey, we won the series, let's be content.' Our seniors took care of that, they made sure we were ready to go."

UC Riverside fell to 10-18 overall and 0-3 in league play with the loss, managing just eight hits and a single run in the seventh.

Jacobson (3-0) finished off his fourth quality start of the season with seven strong innings, allowing just seven hits and a single run while striking out eight -- just one off his career high of nine set at Fresno State on March 15. Freshman Matt Blais came on in the eighth to close it out, allowing a hit and a walk over the final two innings.

"We started seeing how well Raul could pitch last year," Vaughn said. "He was unreal last year and, to do what he's done, come back from the injury he came back from... His stuff is Friday night stuff and it's really nice to have him on Sunday, and go into that game knowing you have a good chance to win."

Keaton Leach (2-3) suffered the loss for UCR, tagged for nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Tino Lipson got the Aggies on the board first with an RBI single in the third and Izaak Silva added a run-scoring double in the fourth for a 2-0 lead before UC Davis broke the game wide open with a seven-run fifth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and getting help from a pair of errors by the Highlanders' defense.

A sacrifice fly by Nick Lynch got the scoring started and another fly ball down the left field line by Spencer Henderson was misplayed by the fielder, dropping fair and allowing two runs to score and make it 5-0. Silva, John Williams, and Tanner Bily, added RBI singles, and Evan Heptig squeezed home another run in the frame to make it 9-0 and the rout was on.

An RBI ground out by Silva in the sixth, and a three-run seventh highlighted by run-scoring hits from Lynch (single) and pinch hitter Guillermo Salazar (two-run double), capped the scoring for the Aggies.

Robby Witt drove home Riverside's only run of the game with a double in the seventh, plating Joe Chavez, who singled to lead-off the inning.

The 17 hits for UC Davis -- a total that included five doubles -- are second only to the 18 hits by the Aggies at Seattle on March 7 in a 13-1 victory. UC Davis has talked double-digit hits in each of its last three games and 12 overall this season.

Bily, Lynch, and Williams, each finished with three hits for the Aggies, while Silva added two hits and three RBI, and Lipson was 2-for-4. Cody Sporrer and Dante Chupek each had two hits to pace the Highlanders.

"(UC Riverside) is a very good offensive team, they've had some injuries and they played a lot of young guys against us this weekend," Vaughn said. "It's the start of conference and we, traditionally, haven't started conference well, so to get this kind of start, regardless of who we're playing is a good thing and will help us moving forward."

The Aggies close out their four-game homestand on Tuesday (March 31) at 2:30 p.m., welcoming Saint Mary's to Dobbins Stadium. The non-conference midweek affair precedes a four-game series in Honolulu (only three of which will count as Big West games), as UC Davis takes on Hawai'i on April 2-5.
