STANFORD, Calif. - One of the largest fields the UC Davis men's golf team will face this season, highlighted by nine teams among Golfstat's top 50, awaits the Aggies beginning Thursday when they travel to the Bay Area for The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course.
Twenty-four teams from throughout the country are set for the three-day, 54-hole tournament that begins at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. Teams will tee off on the first and 10th holes throughout the day. UC Davis will start at 12:15 p.m. on the first hole and will play with Northwestern and Pepperdine. Luke Vivolo, Mike Brockington, Matt Seramin, Ryan Han and Patrick Soli will comprise the Aggies' lineup while Nicholas Noya will compete as an individual.
The field is a loaded one, featuring No. 8 USC and No. 9 Oregon as well as the No. 17 host Cardinal and No. 25 UNLV. SMU, ranked 32nd, as well as No. 33 TCU, No. 37 Colorado and No. 38 UAB are also in the tournament. The No. 67 Aggies are among 11 other teams ranked between 55th and 98th that will be competing.
The Goodwin was previously called the U.S. Intercollegiate but received its new name last year in honor of former Stanford coach Wally Goodwin, a two-time national coach of the year who also won an NCAA title in 1994. Among the players that he coached were Tiger Woods, Casey Martin and Notah Begay.
Defending champion Stanford has won its own tournament 14 times and has had 14 medalists. The Aggies were 10th at last year's tournament.
UC Davis has not played a full tournament since co-hosting The Prestige at PGA WEST with Stanford in February. The Aggies traveled to Oregon for the Bandon Dunes Championship two weeks ago and were tied for sixth after two rounds before inclement weather forced cancellation of the final round on Mar. 15.
Vivolo (71.6) continues to lead UC Davis in scoring while Seramin (73.4), Brockington (73.9) and Han (74.1) are also shooting well while Noya (74.5) is close behind. Soli is playing in just his fourth event of the year and is averaging 75.63 strokes per round.
