LAHAINA, Hawaii - Andrea Wong won her second tournament of the season, Paige Lee battled her tought before finishing a strong second and the No. 32 UC Davis women's golf team beat six ranked teams on its way winning the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at The Bay Course on Wednesday afternoon.
The Aggies were the only team to complete the 54-hole tournament on Maui under par, posting a 1-under 863 while finishing eight shots in front of No. 50 Texas (+7). Louisville (+10), ranked 39th, was third, No. 46 SMU (+14) was fourth and No. 27 Oregon (+15) took fifth. San Jose State (+20), ranked 42nd, and No. 47 Gonzaga (+25) rounded out the top seven.
UC Davis' 863 team score was its lowest of the season and also marked the first time in the history of the program the Aggies have finished under par. The team title was the Aggies' first since winning their fifth straight Big West Championship last April, their first-regular season banner since capturing the Hoosier Fall Invitational in the fall of 2013 and the 16th win for the program overall.
Wong shot a 2-under 70 in Wednesday's final round for a 7-under 209 total. She beat teammate Paige Lee who had a 72 and was 4 under. Betty Chen tied for 19th at 5 over after also carding a 72 while seniors Blair Lewis and Beverly Vatananugulkit tied for 37th at 12 over after posting 72 and 79, respectively, in the final round.
"This win was a great team effort," said head coach Anna Temple. "Every single player contributed to our team score and to finish under par for 54 holes was a good accomplishment. Andrea and Paige played very well this week and it was fun for the team to see them step up in that way. It was great to have two players competing for the individual title and to push each other in that way."
Wong entered the day with a one-shot lead over Lee after the two separated themselves by three shots over the rest of the field after the second round. They briefly exchanged the lead on Wednesday and were tied down the stretch before Wong was able to come out on top. It was her second win of the season, joining medalist honors she captured at the East & West Match Play Challenge at Michigan during the fall. Lee was trying for her second victory of the year. She posted a top-five finish for the third time this season.
Wong started her final round with five consecutive pars before collecting an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole to push her two shots in the red. She was 1 under later in the round before back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes helped her card a 2-under score.
Lee also had a strong front nine, picking up a birdie in the par-3 third hole and the par-3 eighth to go to 2 under. She made her turn 1 under and had two more birdies on the back on her way to her second straight 72. Chen's round of 72 featured three birdies and a 1-under 36 on the back nine while Lewis - who had her best round of the tournament - also shot 72 after playing both sides of the course even and posting four birdies overall. Vatananugulkit highlighted her day with a 1-over 36 on the front nine while picking up three birdies overall - all of them on par-5 holes.
Wong is ranked 73rd by Golfstat and beat two golfers ahead of her, including No. 55 Caroline Inglis who was third, and No. 62 Bertine Strauss who tied for fourth. Inglis finished 1 under and was the only other golfer in the 91-player field to break par this week.
UC Davis' win gave it its sixth top-three placing in eight tournaments this season. The Aggies' will return to action at the DAC/SMU Invitational on Apr. 10-11 prior to hosting the Big West Championships on Apr. 19-20 at El Macero Country Club.
