Aggies' pitching stifles San Francisco in shutout

Box Score March 24, 2015

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO -- Junior right-hander Max Cordy struck out seven over five innings of work while combining with three teammates on a four-hitter, helping lead visiting UC Davis to a 1-0 shutout of host San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

The win was the third straight -- and the sixth in the last seven -- for the Aggies, who improved to 14-7-1 overall heading into this weekend's Big West Conference-opening series against UC Riverside. The Dons fell to 9-16 overall with the loss.

Coupled with its 1-0 shutout in the series finale at Fresno State on March 15, UC Davis posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since March 11 and March 18, 2012, against Seattle (3-0) and San Jose State (4-0), respectively. According to available year-by-year results that date back to 1960, it is the first time that the Aggies have won back-to-back games by 1-0 scores.

A two-out RBI single by John Williams plated Izaak Silva with, what would turn out to be, the only run of the game in support of a stellar effort by the UC Davis staff. Silva doubled with one out and scored when Williams dropped his first of two hits on the day into the gap in right centerfield.

That was more than enough for the quartet of Cordy (5-0), sophomore Orlando Razo, senior Raul Jacobson, and sophomore Zach Stone -- the latter nailing down his sixth save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Cordy remained perfect on the year thanks to a season-high strikeout total, stranding five base runners on two hits, a pair of walks, and a hit batter, leaving three of those in scoring position.

Razo then came on to start the sixth and allowed a lead-off single to Brendan Hendriks before striking out a pair to end the inning, and finished with three punch-outs over two innings. Jacobson allowed only a two-out single in the eighth before giving way to Stone in the ninth, who struck out the first two batters he faced before getting Ross Puskarich to fly out to center to end the game.

Most of the damage was done by the bottom four in the Aggies' lineup, who combined for seven of the team's nine hits on the day. Silva, Williams, and freshman Alex Aguiar, each finished with a pair of hits, while Silva, Tino Lipson, and Evan Heptig, each collected doubles on the day, as UC Davis out-hit San Francisco, 9-4.

With his double, Lipson extended his team-best hitting streak to seven games, batting .500 (14-for-28) with six runs scored, four extra-base hits, and seven RBI.

After playing 11 of their last 12 away from home, the Aggies return to Dobbins Stadium this weekend to host only their second weekend series of the year, welcoming the Highlanders for three games. The series opens on Friday (March 27) at 2:30 p.m., with a 1 p.m. first pitch scheduled for games two and three on Saturday and Sunday.
