March 23, 2015 A group of seven UC Davis student-athletes combined for 16 total awards as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced its all-conference team for women's gymnastics Monday morning. The All-MPSF accolades arrive on the heels of the Aggies' team championship, won Saturday night at Alaska Anchorage.
Junior Dani Judal won four all-conference awards, seniors Tiana Montell and Kala DeFrancesco won three each, freshman Alexis Brown and junior Stephanie Stamates garnered two apiece, while junior Cassandra Quebral and sophomore Katy Nogaki each picked up one.
The All-MPSF awards are based on the conference's regional-qualifying score rankings as of the Monday prior to the championship meet. The highest-ranked gymnast on each team plus the next six at-large are chosen for the all-conference squads for each of the four events plus the all-around.
Judal (Antelope, California/Byers Roseville) earned spots on each of vault, uneven bars, balance beam and the all-around. She led the Aggies on bars with a 9.810 RQS while her beam score of 9.800 ranked second in the MPSF behind teammate Stamates. Judal also had RQSs of 9.785 on vault and 38.895 in the all-around, the latter helped by a school-record 39.450 in the team's home finale.
Montell (Hilo, Hawaii/Pantheon) tied Nogaki for the MPSF lead on vault, led UC Davis in the all-around at 38.940 and had a 9.805 RQS on floor exercise. Her 9.850 average on vault was helped by two 9.900s, part of a tie atop the school record book. Montell finishes her career with seven total All-MPSF plaudits.
DeFrancesco (Murrieta, California/SCEGA) made the vault, bars and floor squads for the second consecutive year, bringing her career total to seven. She tied Sacramento State's Cassie Benning for the conference lead on floor (9.845), ranked fourth on bars (9.795) and grabbed the last at-large spot on vault (9.780). DeFrancesco hit 4-for-4 in her routines in Saturday's championship, finishing the year with a 38-for-40 success rate in 2015.
Stamates (Alamo, California/California Gymnastics Academy) repeated her All-MPSF accolades on each of beam and floor, leading the conference in the former at 9.805 while ranking fourth in the latter with a 9.830 RQS. She scored 9.800 or higher 13 times in her junior year, including a 9.950 on floor that tied an 11-year-old school record. Stamates now has three all-conference awards on floor in as many years.
Brown (Huntington Beach, California/Team OC) recovered from preseason injury to win All-MPSF distinction on each of vault and beam. Her 9.820 average on vault included three 9.850 scores while her beam average of 9.795 was fourth in the MPSF. Brown's return from injury left her a few meets shy of the minimums on floor exercise and all-around, as her 38.900 total average would have likely put her into that category in a full season.
Nogaki (Orange, California/Wildfire Gymnastics) snared her second straight All-MPSF award on vault, sharing the conference lead with Montell at 9.850. She tied her own school record of 9.900 in back-to-back meets during early February, and never scored lower than 9.775 in 12 meets.
Quebral (Stockton, California/GymStars) landed her first All-MPSF award, tying for second in the conference with a 9.800 RQS. Despite having appeared in the beam lineup just twice before her final season, Quebral scored 9.800 or better six times in her redshirt junior campaign, including a personal-best 9.875 in the home finale on March 13.
San Jose State's Cami Guyer, who led the all-arounders at 39.130 and won Saturday's individual title, earned MPSF Gymnast of the Year honors. Sacramento State freshman Lauren Rice was selected as Newcomer of the Year, thanks to her No. 2 all-around RQS of 38.945. The Hornets also grabbed the two coaching awards, as Randy Solorio won his second straight Assistant Coach of the Year nod and Kim Hughes picked up MPSF Coach of the Year accolades in his final season at the helm.
UC Davis' team championship marked its sixth in the 15-year history of the conference, and its fifth in the last six seasons.
