FRESNO, Calif. -- Senior right-hander Raul Jacobson scattered just two hits while striking out nine, combining with three other pitchers on a three-hit shutout on Sunday afternoon, lifting visiting UC Davis to a 1-0 victory over Fresno State at Pete Beiden Field.
Winners of five of their last six, the Aggies improved to 13-7-1 overall, posting their first shutout of the season and the team's first since an 11-0 victory at CSUN on May 3, 2014. The Bulldogs, who managed only seven baserunners on the day thanks to three hits and four walks, fell to 10-11 on the year.
Jacobson pitched into the eighth, allowing just a double to Brody Russell in the second and a single to McCarthy Tatum in the fifth, retiring 10 in a row at one point and another eight straight later in the game. Two of his three walks came in the first inning, while the nine strikeouts were a career high.
Junior Spencer Henderson (1-1) came in to get the final out of the eighth, needing just three pitches to turn away the Bulldogs, who had runners on first and second. Sophomore Zach Stone nailed down his fifth save of the year -- and his second of the weekend -- allowing a hit and striking out one in the ninth.
Jake Shull (2-3), who earned his fourth save of the season in the opener, took the loss, allowing the only run of the game (unearned) in the ninth while surrendering a hit and striking out one. Starter Garrett Mundell matched Jacobson zero for zero in his start, scattering six hits and striking out five through 7 2/3 innings but, like Jacobson, took home the no-decision.
The Aggies' rally in the ninth all came with two outs after Austin March walked to lead-off the inning -- keeping alive his streak of reaching base safely in every game this season -- and was still there after a pop-up and strikeout. Running with two outs, March moved all the way to third when Izaak Silva followed with a single to center to bring up freshman Alex Aguiar. Down two strikes, Aguiar hit a slow-roller to second where it was mishandled by the fielder, beating out a throw, and allowing March to score the go-ahead run.
On came Stone to face the Bulldogs in the ninth, and he got two quick outs via a strikeout and fly ball before Manny Argomaniz laced a single to right center. Stone settled back in and closed out the game, inducing Aaron Arruda to fly out to centerfield and end the game.
Jacobson and company combined to strand six base runners on the day -- three of those in scoring position -- including a runner at third in the second following Russell's double. The Aggies also had their chances, stranding eight for the game, including a runner at third in the sixth.
Junior Tanner Bily finished 3-for-4 with a trio of singles, while Tino Lipson added a 2-for-3 day for UC Davis, extending his hitting streak to six games.
The Aggies now break for final exams, not returning to the diamond until March 24 with a road game at San Francisco at 3 p.m. The midweek clash with the Dons preceeds the team's Big West Conference opener as UC Davis welcomes UC Riverside to Dobbins Stadium for a three-game series on March 27-29.
