FRESNO, Calif. -- Senior Tino Lipson's two-run triple in the eighth gave UC Davis the lead, and the visiting Aggies stranded a pair in scoring position in the ninth, helping lift them to a 4-3 victory over host Fresno State on Saturday night in game two of their series at Pete Beiden Field.
UC Davis improved to 12-7-1 overall with the win, scoring three times in the final two innings to erase a one-run deficit. The Bulldogs fell to 10-10 overall despite edging the Aggies in the hit column, 10-9.
Sophomore left-hander Orlando Razo (4-1) earned his third consecutive win, retiring the first 13 batters he faced before Manny Argomaniz singled with one out in the fifth, breaking up the no-hitter. Razo pitched into the eighth, allowing two runs on eight hits, and striking out six. Sophomore closer Zach Stone then worked out of a ninth-inning jam to nail down his fourth save of the year, allowing an unearned run on two hits over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Tim Borst (1-2) -- the third of seven Fresno State pitchers on the night -- took the loss, allowing two earned on three hits while striking out four over 3 2/3 innings. Dylan Lee started, allowing an unearned run on three hits while striking out three over three innings.
The Aggies' rally came with two outs in the eighth and down a run, as Spencer Henderson walked and Kevin Barker reached on an infield single to third around a sacrifice and a ground ball to the left side. That brought up Lipson, who send the second pitch he saw from Borst to center field where Brody Russell made a diving attempt, only to have the ball bounce out of his glove when he hit the ground.
Henderson and Barker raced around to put UC Davis up 3-2, as Lipson collected his second triple of the year.
A much-needed insurance run was tacked up in the ninth for the Aggies as Austin March led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored when Henderson's two-hopper was misplayed by the Bulldogs' first baseman, making it 4-2.
After coming on in the eighth and getting a strikeout to end the inning after Silva cut down a base stealer, Stone held off Fresno State in the ninth. A pair of fly balls around a single by Argomaniz put a runner on for the Bulldogs, who added another when Jake Stone was hit by a pitch.
That brought up Torin Goldstein, who knocked a single to left off the glove of Lipson, but a run came home when the ball was thrown away by the Aggies, making it 4-3. Stone wriggled off the hook, however, inducing Korby Batesole into a game-ending ground out.
Barker and fellow senior Nick Lynch finished with two hits apiece -- including a double each -- to lead UC Davis, which had seven different Aggies account for the team's nine hits.
The rubber game of the series begins on Sunday (March 15) at 1 p.m., as senior right-hander Raul Jacobson (2-0) takes the mound against the Bulldogs' Garrett Mundell (1-1).
