FRESNO, Calif. -- Austin Guibor's two-out single to center brought home Ryan Dobson with the go-ahead run in the eighth, and host Fresno State snuffed out a ninth-inning rally on Friday night, taking game one of its three-game series with UC Davis by the score of 5-4 at Pete Beiden Field.
The loss ends a three-game winning streak for the Aggies, who fell to 11-7-1 overall on the year. Senior Nick Lynch finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and reached base four times to pace the UC Davis offense, which amassed 10 hits.
The Bulldogs improved to 10-9 overall, winning their third straight.
Freshman Blake Peters (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing the go-ahead run on three hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. Senior Spencer Koopmans started, but left with a no-decision after allowing three runs on seven hits in just four innings as the Aggies rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the middle innings.
Mark Reece (2-0), the third Bulldogs pitcher of the night, took the win in relief for Fresno State, pitching 1 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, striking out a pair. Jake Shull tallied his fourth save of the season, allowing a hit in the ninth, but getting a double play after a leadoff single and striking out the final batter of the game to nail down the win.
Single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, staked starter Jimmy Lambert to an early lead, but the Aggies' bats would come alive in the fifth. Tino Lipson walked with one out and moved around to third on a bouncing double down the left field line by Lynch -- his second of the night -- to put a pair in scoring position.
Senior Austin March then got the Aggies on the board with a single up the middle to plate Lipson, and Spencer Henderson gave UC Davis the lead, crushing his second home run of the season over the wall in right, making it 4-3. The Aggies had a chance to add to the lead after Izaak Silva followed with a ground-rule double to right center, but Lambert would leave him standing at third after a strikeout and ground ball to the left side to end the inning.
Guibor was the catalyst for the tying run in the Fresno State half of the seventh, tripling off reliever Nat Hamby to start the frame and scoring on Taylor Ward's sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-4.
Lipson (2-for-4) and Tanner Bily (2-for-4) also finished with multiple hits on the night for UC Davis, while Guibor led the Bulldogs, going 3-for-5.
Game two of the series begins at 6:35 p.m. on Saturday night in Fresno, with Aggie left-hander Orlando Razo (3-1, 1.82 ERA) scheduled to take the mound against Dylan Lee (1-2, 6.41 ERA).
