PORTLAND, Ore. -- Mason Novak's pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the 10th scored Spencer Henderson with the go-ahead run, snapping a 5-all tie and helping lift visiting UC Davis to a 7-5 victory over host Portland in extra innings on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.
The Aggies improved to 2-0-1 in extra-inning contests this season and 8-4-1 overall thanks to their second series victory of the year, posting their first-ever wins against the Pilots in Oregon, and taking a series from Portland for the first time since 2005.
The Pilots, who collected 15 hits on the day, fell to 3-11 overall with the loss.
Junior right-hander Max Cordy (3-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing just four hits over 2 2/3 shutout innings, walking one and striking out three. Davis Tominaga (1-2) took the loss in relief, allowing four runs on six hits over the final five innings.
Henderson kicked-off UC Davis' winning rally by being hit by a pitch to lead off the 10th and moved to second when Izaak Silva, who finished a season-best 3-for-3 with two runs scored, was credited with a hit up the middle to put two on with nobody out. John Williams sacrificed the pair into scoring position for the pinch-hitter Novak, who sent a pitch from Tominaga into left field, scoring Henderson to make it 6-5.
Senior Kevin Barker followed with an insurance run, executing the perfect safety squeeze to drive in Silva for the 7-5 advantage. Sophomore closer Zach Stone then relieved Cordy, surrendering a one-out single (only his third hit allowed this season) before getting a strikeout and a line out to end the game and collect his third save of the year.
Portland struck early with runs in the first two innings against UC Davis starter Raul Jacobson, getting an RBI double by Kevin Farley and a run-scoring single by Cody Lenahan in the first for a 2-0 lead. The Pilots tacked on a third run in the second, on an RBI double by Kevin Wade for a 3-0 advantage.
The Aggies got two of the runs back in their half of the third off starter Billy Sahlinger, both coming with two outs. Tino Lipson was hit by a pitch, and scored when white-hot Nick Lynch doubled to right, scoring Lipson all the way from first to make it 3-1. Equally hot Austin March followed with a single to right to play Lynch and make it a one-run game.
Both pitchers then matched zeros until the sixth, when the UC Davis offense put up three runs to take its first lead. March walked to lead-off the inning, and moved to second when Bily sacrificed him over for the first out. That brought up Henderson, who smoked a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right centerfield for his first career home run, giving the Aggies a 4-3 advantage.
After walking in his first two plate appearances, Silva followed with his first hit of the day -- a single to center -- and moved to second when Evan Heptig was hit by a pitch. That turned the lineup over for Barker, who sent the first pitch he saw from Tominaga into center, scoring Silva for a 5-3 lead.
Portland bounced back for the tying runs after the stretch in the seventh, as the duo of Farley and Lenahan struck again, stroking back-to-back RBI singles to tie it at 5-5, and set the stage for the Aggies' rally in extra innings.
Four different UC Davis players finished with multiple hits, including Lynch and March, who logged their sixth multi-hit games of the season. Lynch (six games) and March (five games) also extended lengthy hitting streaks as the Aggies collected double-digits in the hits column for the sixth time this season.
UC Davis makes the short jaunt east for a mid-week clash with Nevada on Tuesday (March 3) at 4 p.m., before returning to the Pacific Northwest for a three-game series at Seattle next weekend (March 6-8).
