PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sophomore left-hander Orlando Razo scattered five hits and struck out seven over six innings of work, while junior Tanner Bily finished with two hits and drove in a pair of runs, helping UC Davis even its series with Portland thanks to a 6-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.
The Aggies ended a brief two-game losing streak, improving to 7-4-1 overall on the year and winning for the first time in eight chances against the Pilots in Oregon. Portland fell to 3-10 overall with the loss, banging out eight hits, but stranding nine runners on base.
Saturday marked the second multi-hit game of the season for Bily, whose big blow came with a two-out, two-run double as part of a four-run fifth that broke the game wide open. Back-to-back doubles with one out by Tino Lipson and Nick Lynch produced the first run of the frame and a 2-0 lead, while Spencer Henderson added a run-scoring single later in the frame that led to a 5-0 advantage.
Senior Evan Heptig's RBI double in the second staked Razo (2-1) to the early lead, as the sophomore escaped a bases-loaded jam in the Pilots half of the inning with a pair of strikeouts around a walk to end the inning and retired nine of the next 10 batters he faced. Austin March added on to the UC Davis lead in the sixth as Kevin Barker led-off with a bunt single and was sacrificed to second with one out. After a walk to Lynch, March laced a single to center, scoring Baker for a 6-0 advantage.
Portland finally broke through against Razo in its half of the sixth, getting a double by Kevin Wade and an RBI groundout by Cody Lenahan to make it 6-1.
That would be all for the Pilots, however, as Nat Hamby came on in relief and allowed just three hits in two innings, striking out three and snuffing out a Pilot rally by stranding a pair in the eighth. After a walk and a single to start the ninth, sophomore Zach Stone came on to close out the game, striking out a pair around a pop-out to end another rally.
With his two hits, March has now reached base safely in all 12 games for the Aggies and has a team-best five multi-hit games, while Lynch's double in the fifth extended his hitting streak to six games -- tying him with March for the longest by a UC Davis hitter this season. Lipson and Bily, who logged his team-high fourth multi-RBI game of the season, each stole a base on Saturday, giving UC Davis 43 steals in 52 chances.
