PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland right-hander Jackson Lockwood scattered eight hits over eight strong innings, and the host Pilots used a three-run third inning for all the runs they would need Friday afternoon, posting a 5-2 victory over visiting UC Davis at Joe Etzel Field.
Senior Austin March finished 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Aggies, who fell to 6-4-1 overall on the season. Portland snapped a two-game losing streak, winning for only the second time in their last seven games, and improving to 3-9 overall on the year.
Senior right-hander Spencer Koopmans (1-1) suffered the loss, but pitched well outside of that bumpy third inning, allowing just a walk through the first two innings and retiring eight in a row from the fourth to the sixth until running into a bit of trouble. He was charged with five runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings of work, walking three and striking out six.
Freshman right-hander Blake Peters came on in relief in the seventh, allowing just one hit and striking out one over the final 1 1/3 innings to close out the game.
Seven different Aggies collected hits on the day, including senior Nick Lynch, who slugged his team-best eighth double of the year in his first at-bat, extending his hitting streak to five games. March, who has now reached base safely in all 11 games for the Aggies, added an RBI single in the sixth to get UC Davis on the board, while Lynch's RBI groundout in the eighth accounted for UC Davis' runs.
However, all the damage was done in a big third inning for Portland, as the home team sent seven batters to the plate and slugged three doubles, including run-scoring two-base hits by Geoffrey Lee and Kevin Farley around a Kevin Wade RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead.
Lockwood (1-1) surrendered just four hits through the first five innings until the Aggies finally got on the board thanks to March's hit in the sixth to make it a two-run game. The Pilots worked away from any further damage in the inning, throwing out a runner at the plate on a fly ball to end the inning.
Run-scoring hits by Turner Gill (single) in the sixth and Lee (double) in the seventh capped the scoring for Portland as Lockwood gave way to Davis Tominaga, who hit a batter in the ninth, but induced a game-ending 1-6-3 double play to nail down the win.
Lee and Gill each finished 2-for-4, accounting for half of the Pilots' eight hits on the day. March logged his fourth multi-hit game of the year for UC Davis, while senior Kevin Barker added a double (his third of the year) and his 10th stolen base of the season. The Aggies, who entered the weekend with a nation-leading 40 stolen bases, finished 1-for-2 in that category on Friday, and are now 41-for-50 on the year.
The two teams continue their series on Saturday (Feb. 28) at 1 p.m., with sophomore left-hander Orlando Razo taking the mound for the Aggies against Portland right-hander Kurt Yinger.
