DAVIS, Calif. -- Mike Mioduszewski's RBI single in the eighth broke a 2-all tie and visiting Eastern Michigan added an insurance run in the ninth, lifting the Eagles to a 4-2 victory over host UC Davis and a split of the two-game midweek series on Wednesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
Senior
Nick Lynch continued his torrid start to the season, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for the Aggies, who fell to 6-3-1 overall on the year with the loss. UC Davis swiped seven bases in the game to increase its nation-leading total to 40 (in 48 attempts) on the season, including two more by senior
Kevin Barker, who is now 9-for-11 in that category.
EMU, which collected 12 hits and had a quartet of hitters finish with two hits on the day, improved to 3-6 overall.
The two teams were even for most of the game, with UC Davis' defense cutting off numerous Eastern Michigan scoring opportunities for the first seven innings. A pair of double plays -- one in the first with the bases loaded and a second in the sixth after the first two batters reached via walks -- helped the Aggies strand seven Eagles on base, but EMU was able to break through for the go-ahead run late.
A pair of singles around a foul out put two on for Eastern Michigan, but right-hander
Blake Peters, who came in in relief of
Spencer Henderson (0-1), induced a fly ball to center field for the second out and inch UC Davis closer to ending the inning. That brought up Mioduszewski, who bounced a 1-1 pitch back up the middle to plate Brennan Williams to make it 3-2, but the Aggies escaped further damage by catching Mitchell McGeein in a rundown and erasing him heading back to second base to end the inning.
Eastern Michigan added a run in the ninth in a single by David Lett for the 4-2 lead as Sam Delaplane (1-0), who came on in relief of starter Kyle Huckaby in the seventh and got the Eagles out of a runners on second and third jam with the score tied, retired the final seven Aggies -- four of those via the strikeout -- to nail down his first win of the year, allowing only a two-out single by
Evan Heptig in the ninth.
Henderson suffered the loss for UC Davis in relief, allowing the single run on three hits in two innings of work, as the Aggies used six pitchers on the day.
After loading the bases on a double, single, and a walk, in the first, but coming away empty, the Eagles got on the scoreboard first in the second thanks to an RBI groundout by Austin Wilson after a Mioduszewski double for the 1-0 lead. UC Davis evened things up in its half of the inning as Lynch led-off with a double, moved to third on an error, and scored on
Mason Novak's sac fly.
It stayed that way until both teams added single runs in the fourth, EMU on an RBI single by Adam Dennison and the Aggies on an RBI single to right by pinch hitter
Guillermo Salazar, to make it 2-2.
Lynch extended hits hitting streak to four games (9-for-15) with his team-high fifth multi-hit game of the year, including his team-leading seventh double. Senior
Austin March singled in the sixth, reaching base safely in all 10 games for UC Davis this season.
The Aggies open a string this weekend that will see them play 11 of their next 12 contests on the road, beginning with a three-game series at the University of Portland on Feb. 27-March 1 at Joe Etzel Field in Oregon.
