DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior Austin March's bases-loaded, two-out single to center in the bottom of the ninth plated Brad Pluschkell with the winning run, bringing host UC Davis all the way back from two runs down to post a 5-4 win over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
March finished 3-for-4 with three RBI to help power a 10-hit attack for the Aggies, who improved to 6-2-1 overall on the year. The Eagles, in the midst of an 21-game road trip to start the season, fell to 2-6 overall.
Sophomore right-hander Zach Stone (1-0) got the win in relief of starter Max Cordy, walking one and striking out one in a scoreless, hitless, ninth inning. Cordy scatted just three earned over eight innings, striking out six, but was stuck with the no decision after his team rallied to tie it in the bottom of the eighth.
Reliever Michael Marsinek (0-1), the fourth of five Eagles pitchers on the day, suffered the loss, allowing a double and hitting a batter in the ninth that eventually led to the winning run.
Trailing 4-2 in the fourth after Eastern Michigan broke a 2-all tie on RBI singles from Mike Mioduszewski and Tony DiLeo, the Aggies got one of the runs back in their half of the inning after Izaak Silva, who finished 2-for-4, tripled to lead-off the frame and scored two batters later on Evan Heptig's sac fly to make it a one-run game.
UC Davis used tremendous defense to stay within striking distance, getting double plays to end the final three innings, and breaking through for the tying run in the eighth. Nick Lynch smacked a one-out double that one-hopped the wall in center, stole third, and stayed there as the Aggies loaded the bases with back-to-back walks to March and pinch hitter Mason Novak around a pitching change.
That brought up Silva, whose hot shot to third was misplayed by the fielder, allowing Lynch to score and knot things up at 4-4. A double play got the Eagles off the hook, setting the stage for UC Davis' last at-bat heroics.
Heptig led-off the decisive frame with a double that snuck just inside the third base bag and Kevin Barker was hit by a pitch to put two on with nobody out. Tino Lipson, whose single in the first extended his hitting streak to five games, then sacrificed both runners over and Tanner Bily was greeted by reliever Matthew Beaton with another hit by pitch to load the bases.
Lynch hit a 1-1 pitch on the screws, but right at the shortstop, who was playing in, for the second out to bring up March. The senior fell behind in the count and was down to his last strike before working the count full. He then stroked the seventh pitch of the at-bat back up the middle and into centerfield, allowing Pluschkell to score the winning run.
March's RBI single in the first gave the Aggies a quick 1-0 lead, but the Eagles responded with two in the second on a two-run double by DiLeo to make it 2-1. UC Davis drew even with a run in the third, as Lynch walked and scored all the way from first on March's two-out double to right field to make it 2-2.
It was the third multi-hit game of the season for March and the first multi-RBI contest for the Redwood City, California, native, who has reached base safely in each of the Aggies' nine games this year. With his two hits, Silva also extended his hitting streak to four games, launching his first triple of the season, while collecting his sixth extra-base hit of the year -- tied with Lynch (six doubles) for the team lead.
DiLeo and Mioduszewski led Eastern Michigan with two hits apiece and drove in all four runs for the Eagles.
The two teams meet again on Wednesday (Feb. 25) at 2 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium, closing out a seven-game homestand for UC Davis.
