Senior third baseman
Nick Lynch rapped out four hits while
Izaak Silva and
Tanner Bily each drove in three runs, helping UC Davis take a 10-5 win over Gonzaga to close out a four-game collegiate baseball series at Dobbins Stadium on Sunday.
The Aggies improve to 5-2-1 for the year. The Bulldogs even their overall record to 4-4.
The three fifth-year UC Davis seniors figured heavily in Sunday's victory. Lynch had two doubles, including one in the five-run first inning, among his 4-for-5 day. Second baseman Tino Lipson added two hits, stole two bases and scored three runs while handling 12 chances in the field. Starting pitcher Raul Jacobson settled down after a rough first frame, facing the minimum from the fifth through eighth innings en route to his first win of the year.
Silva delivered the key blow in the first, clearing the bases with his bounding double down the left-field line, bringing in Lynch, Austin March and Spencer Henderson. This sprung UC Davis to a 5-2 lead, erasing a 2-0 GU start sparked by Jimmy Sinatro's two-run double.
The Aggies never trailed for the remainder of the game. Lipson scored on the first of his team's seven stolen bases on the day, swiping third then coming home when the throw scooted away from senior third baseman Mitchell Gunsolus. Bily, who drove in UC Davis' first run on a sacrifice fly, plated two more in the sixth. He fought off four foul balls before driving a shot to center to bring in Lipson and Evan Heptig.
Spencer Henderson led off the seventh with a double to left, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, then scored when John Williams' ground ball glanced off second baseman Justin Jacobs' glove in the middle of the infield. Jacobs, moving toward the shortstop side in front of second base, had no play on Henderson and would have had a tough throw to get the speedy Williams at first. Williams later scored on a stolen base-throwing error combination, extending the Aggie lead to 10-3.
Jacobson started the ninth in a bid for a complete game, but an error to start the frame opened the door to a brief Zag rally. Sophomore Zach Stone yielded an infield RBI single that wiped Jacobson of a quality start, but froze Branson Trube for the second out and induced a Caleb Wood pop-up to close out the game.
Five different Bulldog players collected at least two hits in the contest, with Gunsolus leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance. Freshman Eli Morgan largely quieted the Aggie bats after GU starter Sean-Luke Brija left the game in the first. Morgan yielded five hits and two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, with most of the damaged done in the two-run UC Davis seventh.
The Aggies' seven stolen bases raises their season total to 30 bags on 36 attempts in 2015.
UC Davis finishes its seven-game homestand with games against Eastern Michigan on Tuesday and Wednesday.
