DAVIS, Calif. -- Austin March went 3-for-3 in the opener and lefty Spencer Henderson did not allow an earned run in 4 2/3 innings in the nightcap, but UC Davis ultimately surrendered totals of 31 hits and 21 runs in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Gonzaga by the scores of 13-4 and 8-2 in non-conference baseball action at Dobbins Stadium Saturday.
The two losses also snap UC Davis' unbeaten streak, dropping the Aggies to 4-2-1 for the year. Gonzaga improved to 4-3 overall with the two wins.
March added three stolen bases and was joined by teammates Mason Novak and Tino Lipson with three hits on the day, but six errors added to the frustrations, leading to nine unearned runs.
UC Davis and Gonzaga complete the four-game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Dobbins Stadium.
GAME 1: GONZAGA 13, UC DAVIS 4
Three different Aggies finished with multiple hits, including a 3-for-3 day by Austin March, but multiple runs in the middle innings and a five-run seventh by the Bulldogs erased an early UC Davis lead en route to a 13-4 win in the opener.
Sophomore left-hander Orlando Razo (1-1) suffered the loss, charged with just two earned runs on six hits and striking out two over 3 2/3 innings of work. Three Aggie relievers followed, but could not contain the Gonzaga offense, which out-hit UC Davis, 18-11, for the game.
Andrew Sopko (1-0) earned the win, allowing just two runs on seven hits and striking out three over six innings. Wyatt Mills shut the door, allowing just two runs on four hits over the final three innings.
The day started well for the Aggies, jumping out to an early lead following a quiet first inning. March singled to lead-off the second, stole second, and was balked to third, eventually scoring on a double down the left field line by freshman Alex Aguiar for the 1-0 lead. Senior Izaak Silva followed with a double of his own -- his team-best fourth of the year -- to plate Aguiar and make it 2-0.
However, that was only the calm before the storm, as Gonzaga brought a hitting onslaught through the middle innings, pushing across two in the third, four in the fourth, two in the fifth, and five in the seventh. The Bulldogs sent nine batters to the plate in both the fourth and seventh innings.
The Aggies tacked on two more runs in the eighth. Senior Nick Lynch walked to lead-off the inning and was moved up on a pinch-hit single by Mason Novak. Freshman Guillermo Salazar then logged his first career hit, a pinch-hit single down the left field line to drive home his first career run, and was followed by Aguiar, who brought home the final run with a ground ball to the left side.
GAME 2: GONZAGA 8, UC DAVIS 2
Gonzaga catcher Troy LaBrie lofted a home run down the right field line in a two-run second, then four different Bulldog batters collected hits in a four-run third off Aggie starter Nat Hamby before the junior Henderson could come in to settle the opposing offense for almost five complete innings, striking out four.
An Aggie throwing error figured in two more unearned runs in the third, helping the Zags climb to a 7-1 lead. Then a dropped fly ball in the eighth opened the door for a fifth unearned run, extending the margin to seven.
UC Davis finally got on the board in the bottom half of the seventh as Mason Novak led off with a double down the left field line and came around to score two batters later on newcomer Elijah Ontiveros' first career hit -- a single to right. The Aggies tacked on another in the eighth as Tino Lipson singled through the middle, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on Nick Lynch's poke to right, then came home on a John Williams fielder's choice.
Bulldog freshman Calvin LeBrun (1-1) held UC Davis to seven hits and two runs in eight innings for the win. Hamby (0-1) suffered the loss in his first career start as an Aggie, allowing three earned on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. Freshman Aaron Gutierrez made his first career appearance, allowing just two hits and striking out two in two shutout innings.
Lynch, Novak, and freshman Brad Pluschkell, finished with two hits, combining for six of the team's eight on the day.
