DAVIS, Calif. - Spencer Koopmans allowed just two hits in eight shutout innings of work on the mound while Kevin Barker picked up three hits and scored two runs as UC Davis remained unbeaten with a 6-2 nonconference baseball win over Gonzaga at Dobbins Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Aggies, who jumped to an early 3-0 lead, improved to 4-0-1 while the Bulldogs, led by a pair of hits apiece from Jimmy Sinatro and Caleb Wood, fell to 2-3. The game was the first of a four-game weekend series between the teams.
Koopmans was masterful in his second start of the young season, allowing only a one-out single to left by Wood in the second inning and then a single through the hole by Sinatro in the seventh. He struck out four batters, walked just two and only let two runners get into scoring position.
"I think the biggest thing was he was getting ahead," said Aggie head coach Matt Vaughn. "He commanded his changeup very well. They couldn't sit on any one pitch and any one count because he could throw both of those, and he got a ton of outs with the changeup."
Barker got things going for UC Davis in the first inning, getting a leadoff to center and eventually coming in on a groundout after moving to third on Tino Lipson's single to right. An unearned run gave the Aggies a quick 2-0 lead. Barker's single to left in the second plated Silva during a three-hit inning and made it 3-0.
Leading 4-0 in the seventh after Nick Lynch's RBI single in the fifth, UC Davis added two more after Barker led off with his third hit and later came around on Lipson's triple to the right-center field gap. A pickoff error brought in Lipson from third and pushed the lead to 6-0.
The Aggies had three hits in each of the first two innings they scored and collected two hits while scoring in the seventh.
"If you look at our history, (timely hitting has) been one of the areas where we could get better and so far this year we've been much better in those situations," Vaughn said. "The team has been incredibly tough in those situations."
Gonzaga put together a two-run ninth off reliever Justin Mullins, picking up four hits and putting two runners into scoring position with two outs before Mullins got catcher Tyler LaBrie to ground out to Evan Heptig to end the game.
Koopmans is now 1-1 while Brandon Bailey took the loss for Gonzaga, falling to 1-1. Lipson and Lynch each had two hits for the Aggies as eight players contributed to the 11-hit attack. Barker also stole his seventh base.
The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. before closing the series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
