STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Paige Lee captured her first career collegiate tournament on Sunday with a two-shot victory after shooting an even-par 71 in the final round of the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Golf Course, helping the UC Davis women's golf team finished second.
Lee's impressive play helped the No. 30 Aggies finish only behind Oregon in the 36-hole tournament. UC Davis shot a 12-over 296 on Sunday, finishing 11 over on the weekend and three strokes behind the Ducks. San Jose State (+13) was second while host Stanford (+17) was fourth.
The Aggies posted their second runner-up finish of the season and their fourth top-three showing in just five events.
Junior Andrea Wong tied for 14th at 5 over after shooting 77 on Sunday, Betty Chen tied for 22nd at 7 over after her round of 72, senior Blair Lewis concluded with a 76 and tied for 32nd at 9 over, and Beverly Vatananugulkit tied for 43rd at 12 over after carding an 82.
Lee had a pair of fourth-place finishes for her previous career-high bests, including one at Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt in the fall. But she took top honors at Stanford after posting seven birdies and just two bogeys during her 36 holes of action. She was 1 over at the turn in Sunday's final round, rattled off six straight pars and then birdied the par-3 17th to get back to even for the day.
She beat Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse for first place. Stackhouse shot a 70 and finished 3 under while Kelsey Ulep of Oregon was one shot back of her. Lee is the Aggies' second medalist of the year, joining Wong who finished first in stroke play at the East-West Match Play Challenge at Michigan in September.
Wong was just 1 over after nine holes before hitting a tough stretch of holes to start the back that put her 4 over. She had a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole to help highlight her day. Chen rebounded well from a first-round 77 by collecting two birdies and just three bogeys on Sunday. Lewis played the front side of the Stanford Golf Course just 2 over while Vatananugulkit had 10 pars.
The tournament was the first of the spring for UC Davis which will next travel to the UC Irvine Invitational on Feb. 23-24.
