STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Paige Lee had a bogey-free round en route to a career-best 5-under 66 and the first-day lead as the No. 30th UC Davis women's golf team took a nine-shot lead on Saturday after the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Golf Course.
Andrea Wong enjoyed a spectacular afternoon as well, shooting 70 to put her into a tie for fifth place while senior Beverly Vatananugulkit shot 72 and is tied for 11th. Senior Blair Lewis is tied for 22nd after her round of 75 while Betty Chen carded a 76 and is tied for 39th.
The Aggies' outstanding play gave them a 1-under 283 team score and vaulted them into a nine-shot advantage over No. 37 Oregon (+8), while No. 3 Stanford (+9) and No. 47 San Jose State are tied for third.
Lee, who qualified for the U.S. Women's Open last year, shot 69 on the same Stanford Golf Course during the fall's Stanford Intercollegiate for her previous career-low round. She went three strokes under that on Saturday with a round that featured five birdies and 13 pars. Lee birdied all four par-5 holes, including the seventh - her opening hole of the shotgun round - that helped her get into red numbers quickly.
She leads Cassy Isagawa of Oregon and Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford by three shots. Just seven players in the 63-player field managed to break par on Saturday. One of those players was Wong who was 2 over after 11 holes but then rallied down the stretch with three birdies on her final seven holes, including the last two of her round that gave her a 70.
Vatananugulkit's 72 gave UC Davis another player near the top of the leaderboard. She played a very steady round that had 16 pars, a birdie on the par-5 12th, and just one bogey. Lewis was near par most of the day, picking up a pair of birdies along the way, but was 3 over on her last three holes to come in with a 75. Chen had a rough stretch of five holes that put her 6 over but she finished well with five consecutive pars.
The Aggies will try to capture their first tournament of the win on Sunday when they begin the shotgun round at 8:30 a.m. They'll play with Oregon and San Jose State. Six teams in the 12-player field are ranked in Golfstat's top 50.
