SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Junior Tanner Bily's two-out, two-run single snapped a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth in support of sophomore left-hander Orlando Razo, who scattered just six hits in his first career start, lifting UC Davis to a 5-2 win over Texas State and a series victory on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas.
The win gave the Aggies their first series victory of the year, opening a season with two straight wins for the first time since 2013 when they took the first two games -- and eventually 3-of-4 -- from Washington to open that year's campaign. The Bobcats fell to 0-2 with the loss.
After coming out of the bullpen in all 19 of his appearances last season, Razo (1-0) was stellar over his seven innings of work for his first win as a starter, allowing a single run and striking out one, while throwing just 88 pitches. Sophomore right-hander Zach Stone nailed down his second save in as many days, getting a pair of fly balls and a ground ball in a perfect ninth inning to end the game.
Making his first appearance since 2013, Scott Grist (0-1) took the loss for Texas State, charged with three runs on five hits and striking out five in 7 2/3 innings of work.
Locked in a pitcher's duel for the first four innings, it was another late-inning rally that helped propel UC Davis to the win, breaking a 1-all tie with a three-run eighth. John Williams, who finished with a team-high two hits, singled through the right side with one point and moved to second on a ground ball to the right side. Senior Kevin Barker was hit by a pitch and, after a pitching change, senior Tino Lipson drew a walk to load the bases.
A second pitching change brought Quinn Atwood into the game to face Bily, who laced a 1-1 pitch through the hole on the right side, scoring both Williams and Barker for the 3-1 lead. Nick Lynch followed with a ground ball that was misplayed by the Texas State infield on the right side that should have ended the inning, allowing Lipson to score for a 4-1 lead.
The Bobcats got a run back in their half of the eighth on a single by David Paiz, but the Aggies capped the scoring with another run in the ninth on a single by Williams to plate Spencer Henderson for the final 5-2 advantage.
UC Davis broke onto the scoreboard first for the second straight game as Austin March singled with one out, stole second, and scored on Izaak Silva's two-out RBI double, for the 1-0 advantage. Texas State drew even in its half of the inning as Jared Huber singled to lead-off the inning, was sacrificed to second, and scored two batters later on a single to left by Cedric Vallieres to tie the game.
Seven different Aggies finished with hits as they out-hit their hosts by an 8-7 count. Vallieres and Paiz each had two hits to lead the Bobcats.
The series concludes on Sunday (Feb. 15) at 10 a.m. PT as UC Davis looks for the series sweep, sending senior RHP Raul Jacobson (4-1, 3.45 ERA in 2014) to the mound against Texas State left-hander Cory Geisler (3-1, 1.97 ERA in 2014).
