SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Izaak Silva's ground-rule double plated Austin March to key a three-run 10th inning for UC Davis, and the Aggies scored nine times in the final five innings to erase a four-run deficit, lifting them to a 10-7 season-opening win over Texas State on Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas.
UC Davis (1-0) improved to 5-3 all-time in Division I season openers, winning for the third time in the last four seasons. The Bobcats, who held the Aggies to just one hit through the first four innings while building a 5-1 lead, fell to 0-1 overall on the year.
Senior right-hander Max Cordy (1-0) earned the win in relief for UC Davis, allowing a run on three hits and striking out four over two innings of work. Sophomore Zach Stone, who was named to the NCBWA's "Stopper of the Year" watch list earlier in the week, nailed down his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 10th, striking out one.
Joe Powell (0-1), one of seven Texas State pitchers on the night, suffered the loss, allowing three earned on four hits in his one inning of work.
After the Aggies scored three times in the ninth to force extra innings, March walked to lead-off the UC Davis half of the 10th and was sacrificed into scoring position by Spencer Henderson, who finished 3-for-4 on the night. That brought up Silva, who sent the first pitch over the wall on a bounce for a ground-rule double, scoring March to break a 7-7 tie.
A call to the bullpen brought in Powell to face Mason Novak, who promptly sent a 2-2 pitch back up the middle to score Silve and make it 9-7. Freshman Brad Pluschkell walked after Novak stole second, and Kevin Barker was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Tino Lipson, who dropped a 3-1 pitch into left field, plating Novak for the final score.
Stone then shut the door in the bottom of the inning, getting a pair of ground balls around a strikeout to end the game.
UC Davis struck first in the third on a sac fly by Lipson for the 1-0 lead, but Texas State responded quickly with five runs over the next two innings for a four-run advantage.
With only a third-inning single by Barker to their name to that point, the Aggies' offense began to chip away, scoring a pair in the sixth on an RBI single by March and a throwing error following an infield single by Henderson, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
An infield single by Tanner Bily with runners at the corners in the eighth scored Barker to make it a one-run game, but the Bobcats looked to put the game away in their half of the inning as RBI singles by Tanner Hill and Zach Sullivan pushed Texas State out to a 7-4 lead heading to the ninth.
However, the late-inning magic continued for UC Davis, which loaded the bases with one out on a double by Henderson, a walk to Cameron Olson, and a single by freshman Ryan Anderson (his first career hit). Barker wasted no time, taking the second pitch he saw from reliever Justin Dellinger down the left field line to make it a one-run game once again.
A grounder back to the mound caught Anderson in a run-down and he was retired at the plate for the second out, but a clutch single to left by Bily scored Barker from third to tie the game and set up the Aggies' big extra-inning performance.
UC Davis out-hit Texas State, 13-9, for the game, getting two hits and a pair of RBI from Barker, Lipson, and Bily, at the top of the order to join Henderson in the multi-hit club. Senior right-hander Spencer Koopmans started, but was chased in the fourth in favor of sophomore Justin Mullins, who settled the Bobcats' offense by allowing just two runs on two hits and striking out five in four innings of relief.
Cory Geisler and David Paiz each had two hits for Texas State, the latter driving in a pair of runs.
First pitch for game two of the series is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT on Saturday (Feb. 14) with sophomore left-hander Orlando Razo slated to face Bobcats' right-hander Scott Grist.
