Aggies dominate overtime in exhibition win

Nov. 7, 2015

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. -- Host UC Davis survived an end-of-regulation rally by visiting Humboldt State, opening overtime by scoring the first 14 points of the extra period en route to a 77-64 exhibition victory on Saturday afternoon at The Pavilion.

The Aggies officially open their 2015-16 campaign on Friday (Nov. 13), hosting nationally ranked Stanford at The Pavilion at 7:30 p.m., following the men's season-opener against North Dakota State. The Cardinal are ranked No. 14 according USA Today and No. 16 according to the Associated Press in the national preseason polls.

Sophomore Rachel Nagel finished with a team-high 15 points and added six rebounds to lead three Aggies in double figures, as senior Alyson Doherty fought through foul trouble to post 13 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks, while senior Celia Marfone added 12 points and nine rebounds -- including a pair of key three-pointers during that overtime run.

Amanda Kunst finished with a game-high 19 points to go with nine rebounds, hitting 7-of-14 from the field in 36 minutes. Kiana Brown and Neika Puryear finished in double figures, with 11 and 10 points, respectively -- the latter nailing a three-pointer from the left elbow with 16 seconds to go in regulation to force overtime.

A'Jaee Foster finished with a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lumberjacks to lead all players.

Marfone's third three of the game kicked-off the overtime, jumpstarting the winning run that featured another from long-distance from Pele Gianotti and Marfone's fourth from deep that eventually pushed the UC Davis lead to 12 points at 73-61 with just over two minutes to play. Gianotti scored inside to lengthen the run to 14 straight points before a three by Puryear stopped the bleeding but, by then, it was too late.

Freshman Morgan Bertsch hit a short jumper with 29 seconds to play to cap the scoring as the Aggies opened their schedule with with a win.

Trailing by five Marfone drained a three and Nagel added another from deep to regain the lead for UC Davis, an advantage that was eventually pushed to three points on a basket inside by Bertsch to put the Aggies up 49-46 with 7:41 remaining. A three-pointer by Nyaa Davis tied the game for Humboldt State, but a pair of free throws by Dani Nafekh began a see-saw battle down the stretch that saw neither team lead by more than three.

Nagel flew in for a put-back on a miss by Doherty to open up a one-point game and a slash by Nafekh put UC Davis up five with just over two minutes to play, but the Aggies could not pull away. A three-pointer by Kunst pulled the Lumberjacks back to within a pair as UC Davis responded once again. Doherty hit two from the line and, after a lay-up by Brown, Gianotti drained a three from the top of the key with 39 seconds remaining that looked to the be the dagger.

Kunst found a way to stay in bounds on the baseline out of a timeout, looping up a shot from under her own basket to make it a three-point game and give Humboldt State life. A pair of misses from the line by the Aggies opened the door a bit further and the Lumberjacks took advantage as Brown drove the line and found Puryear, who took a tipped ball, and sank the game-tying three from the left elbow to tie the game.

After trading baskets to start the game, the Aggies grabbed a one-point lead on a jumper by Bertsch, who finished with eight points in her debut, but watched as Humboldt State exploded for a 13-4 run to built an eight-point, 19-11, lead with 2:29 to go in the first. Free throws by Lauren Seyranian and Nafekh made it a six-point game at the end of the first quarter and the Aggies continued to roll, making it a one-point game on a three by Nagel and a basket by Doherty just a minute into the second period.

Freshman Kourtney Eaton regained the league for UC Davis with a three-pointer with 5:27 to play in the second, but Brown answered for Humboldt State and the Lumberjacks held off the Aggies for a five-point, 31-26, lead at the break, holding the home team to just 1-for-6 from the field over the final four-plus minutes.

UC Davis shot just 33 percent from the floor for the game, but sank 6-of-9 from the field in the overtime period to pull away. Humboldt State hit just over 30 percent from the field for the game, but was held to just 1-of-8 from the floor in the extra period.
