Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- UC Davis senior Alyson Doherty finished with a game-high 13 points to lead a balanced scoring effort while the visiting Aggies shot 50 percent from the floor for the game, holding off a third-quarter run and cruise to a 72-47 win over Portland on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center.

The Aggies clinch their fourth consecutive victory, improving to 4-2 overall on the season, and won their first against the Pilots in three chances in the history of the series. Portland lost its second straight, held to just 30 percent shooting from the field, while falling to 2-5 overall.

Ten different UC Davis players finished with at least two points paced by Doherty, who hit 6-of-13 from the field while added five rebounds and a pair of blocks in 25 minutes. She enters next week's game at Saint Mary's needing just six points to become the 17th Aggie to reach 1,000 for her career.

Freshman Morgan Bertsch and senior Celia Marfone each added 11 points in the victory, the former adding three rebounds and three assists, and the latter leading all players with seven rebounds. Sophomore point guard Dani Nafekh, who set a career-high with eight assists two nights earlier at Portland State, finished with seven more on Sunday, adding five steals to her seven points and three rebounds in 28 minutes.

Ellie Woerner, who entered the day leading the Pilots at 11.7 ppg, was held to just 10 points on 3-of-11 from the field, finishing as the lone Portland player in double figures.

After leading by 17 at the break, the Pilots came out firing in the second half to cut the deficit to single digits. Portland used an 11-3 run over the first 5:05 to make it a nine-point game, 44-35, holding the Aggies to just three free throws and 0-for-5 from the field in that stretch, forcing a UC Davis timeout.

Out of the break, Doherty scored inside for the team's first field goal of the third quarter and, after trading baskets, the Aggies closed the period on a 10-0 run to bolster the lead back to 20 and UC Davis never looked back.

Portland never got closer than 17 on a three-pointer by Corissa Turley for the first basket of the fourth, but UC Davis used another 6-0 burst and outscored the Pilots, 14-9, in the final period en route to the win.

The Aggies out rebounded Portland, 35-28, using the tandem of Doherty and Bertsch in the post to dominate the paint scoring, 40-14.

UC Davis closes out its three-game road trip next Thursday (Dec. 3) in Moraga, California, taking on Saint Mary's. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. from McKeon Pavilion.
