Three in double figures as Aggies roll over Falcons

Box Score Nov. 23, 2015

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Alyson Doherty finished with a season-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds while classmate Celia Marfone added 11 more on a perfect 5-of-5 from the field to go with three blocks, leading a balanced scoring effort and helping lift the Aggies to a 66-40 victory over visiting Air Force on Monday night at The Pavilion.

The victory evened UC Davis' record at 2-2 overall on the season as the Aggies posted their second consecutive wire-to-wire victory and posted their highest-scoring quarter of the season thus far with 24 points in the third en route to the win. The Falcons remained winless on the year, falling to 0-5 overall to start the season.

"For 40 minutes our goal is to have great effort and great energy and overall, as different lineups came into the game, as different people came into the game, our effort and our energy was very good for 40 minutes," Head Coach Jennifer Gross said.

Doherty hit 5-of-7 from the floor and a season-best 8-of-9 from the line en route to her game-high honors, narrowly missing out on her third double-double in four games and leading a scoring group that saw eight different UC Davis players score at least two points. Sophomore Pele Gianotti added 11 points for her third-straight double-digit performance, while the backcourt duo of Dani Nafekh and Kourtney Eaton combined for nine assists against three turnovers, the latter adding six points and four rebounds to go with her five helpers off the bench.

Sophomore Cortney Porter finished with a team-high 16 points for the Air Force Academy on 5-of-19 from the floor and seven rebounds. Sarah Fotsch came off the bench to lead the Falcons with nine rebounds.

Opening the game on an 8-0 run and leading by as many as 10 points in the first six and a half minutes, the Aggies led by six at the end of one and saw their lead cut to four after Fotsch scored the first bucket of the second quarter. Five quick points by UC Davis rebuilt its lead to nine and, after the Falcons responded to cut it to just five on another basket by Fotsch, a lay-up inside by Rachel Nagel keyed a 6-0 spurt that gave the Aggies a double-digit lead and they never looked back.

UC Davis opened the second half on an 8-2 run and gradually began to pull away leading by 23 points following a Nagel three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer, and extended the advantage to as many as 32 points with just under four minutes remaining in the game on a basket inside by Bertsch.

The 26-point victory was the largest for the Aggies this season and the largest margin of victory since they defeated UC Riverside, 78-52, on March 6, 2014.

UC Davis hits the road for the Thanksgiving holiday, heading to Portland for a pair of games this weekend. The Aggies take on Portland State on Friday (Nov. 27) at 7 p.m., before facing the University of Portland on Sunday (Nov. 29) at 2 p.m.
