FULLERTON, Calif. -- Nigel Patterson's header with less than three minutes remaining in regulation proved to be the only score of the match, lifting host Cal State Fullerton to a 1-0 victory over UC Davis on Saturday night at Titan Stadium.
The loss ended the Aggies' four-match winning streak, dropping them to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in Big West Conference play. The Titans improved to 7-4 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 2-0 after the first weekend.
Fullerton out-shot UC Davis, 19-10, for the match and held a commanding 14-2 advantage in corners on the night, but the Titans and Aggies battled almost to the bitter end before the home side took advantage of a fortuitous bounce for the only goal of the night.
A corner by Colin Okirie found Julian Okai, whose shot was stopped by senior goalkeeper Kris Schultz -- one of his three stops on the night. However, Schultz was unable to corral the rebound, which found the head of Patterson, who headed home his first of the year for the game-winner.
David Elias made four saves on the night for the Titans in recording the shutout -- three of those coming in the first half when he turned away scoring attempts by Matt Wiesenfarth (twice) and Ryan Gross in the first 28 minutes.
Despite being outshot by a 9-5 count in the opening half, the Aggies' defense stood its ground, clearing the ball off the line on a shot by Mitchell Bell in the 15th minute and receiving some help from the woodwork in the 32nd minute when Nicolo D'Amato's shot clanged off the crossbar, keeping the match scoreless.
A header by Lucas Mohageg just two minutes into the second half tested Elias early, but UC Davis' offense, which had outscored opponents 13-2 during its four-match winning streak, was then held without a shot until the 79th minute when back-to-back attempts by Noah Wilson and Gross were blocked by the Fullerton defense.
Wiesenfarth led the offense with three shots on the night, setting a new UC Davis Division I record for career shots with 134 in the process.
UC Davis opens a season-long four-match home stand next weekend against the other half of the Big West's South Division, welcoming CSUN to Aggie Soccer Field on Thursday (Oct. 8) at 4 p.m., before hosting UC Irvine on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 1 p.m.
