SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Steven Guzman's first career goal drew visiting UC Davis level late in the second half Wednesday night, but a pair of penalty kicks following fouls in the box proved to be the difference as No. 22 UC Santa Barbara edged the Aggies, 2-1, at Harder Stadium.
The loss ended UC Davis' four-match unbeaten streak, evening the Aggies' record at 7-7-2 overall and 3-2-2 in Big West Conference play. The Gauchos, who had lost their last two entering the night, earned their first win against a North Division foe, improving to 10-5-1 overall and 5-2 in league.
Guzman's score came off a header in the 74th minute, knocking home a ball after a long throw-in resulted in a mad scramble in the box. The goal was the first of the junior's career while freshman Brian Quintero was credited with an assist -- also the first of his career.
Guzman became the 13th different goal scorer for the Aggies this season -- the most since UC Davis had the same number during its Division I debut season in 2007. Meanwhile, with his assist, Quintero gave the Aggies 17 different players with at least one point this season.
The draw, however, was short-lived as UC Santa Barbara was able to net the go-ahead goal just over a minute later. After leading scorer Nick DePuy was taken down in the box, Kevin Feucht, who had the Gauchos' first goal on a penalty in the 16th minute following a handball in the box, netted his second of the match and fourth of the year in the 75th minute with a low shot to the right side that put UCSB ahead for good.
UC Davis pressed on for the equalizer, taking the final five shots of the match -- including Connor Willis-Hong's attempt in the 77th minute that clanged off the left post from 30 yards out. Freshman Matt Baringer had an attempt turned away by the Gauchos' goalkeeper in the 83rd minute, while senior Lucas Mohageg, who finished with a match-high four shots, had an attempt sail wide in the 86th minute.
The Aggies, who out-shot their hosts by a 12-1 count in the second half (the only attempt being Feucht's penalty kick), finished with a 15-8 advantage in shots, putting nearly half (seven) of those on goal for the match. Gauchos goalkeeper Justin Vom Steeg was tested throughout the night, making five saves and getting some help from his defense just after the whistle started the second half as Randy Mendoza cleared a ball away from danger on a header by Mohageg in the 50th minute.
Wednesday's match featured a combined 29 fouls and six yellow cards -- five of those against UC Santa Barbara.
UC Davis closes out the week with a contest a little closer to home, heading across the Causeway to take on rival Sacramento State on Saturday (Oct. 24) at 3 p.m. at Hornet Field. The two teams are a week removed from a wild 1-1 draw at the Aggie Soccer Field on Oct. 17, when the Aggies had the apparent game-winner waved off due to an offsides call in double overtime.
