Chen shoots 71; Aggies best top teams at Stanford

Oct. 20, 2015

Final results

STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Betty Chen shot par 71 and Paige Lee and Andrea Wong each posted top-20 finishes while helping the UC Davis women's golf team place sixth in the high-powered Stanford Intercollegiate, hosted by Condoleezza Rice, at Stanford Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon.

The Aggies, who concluded their fall season with this week's tournament, shot 12-over 296 in the final round and were 23-over for the week. Seventh-ranked Stanford (-5) posted a seven-shot win over Pac-12 rival and second-ranked USC (+2) while UCLA (+3) took third. Top-ranked Northwestern (+17) was fourth, just one shot in front of fifth-ranked Georgia (+18) and only six in front of the Aggies.

It was a strong way for UC Davis to end their four-tournament fall. The Aggies, ranked 62nd, bested 10 teams ranked higher than it in the most recent Golfstat national rankings. They finished above third-ranked Arizona (+30), No. 11 Arizona State (+34), No. 14 Iowa State (+41), No. 17 Washington (+28), No. 24 Cal (+24), No. 36 San Jose State (+47), No. 38 Oregon (+32), No. 39 Vanderbilt (+42), No. 49 Auburn (+65) and No. 61 Pepperdine (+52).

"It was a great way to end the fall because we got some really good wins against some really good teams," said Aggie coach Anna Temple. "To have an under-par round (on Monday) under our belt is also really nice going into the offseason and definitely a motivator. So, as a general whole, it was a really good place to leave the fall and I think it will give us a good base to start the spring."

Chen paced UC Davis on the final day with a spectacular front nine that saw her birdie the second hole while playing the front nine at 1 under. She added another birdie and six pars to help cover the final nine holes just a shot over par. She tied for 23rd at 5 over.

Lee and Wong placed tied for 11th and 17th, respectively, after hovering near par for the three-day tournament. Both players shot 75 on Tuesday. Lee was 2 over overall while Wong was just 3 over. Both players were 4 over after nine holes but rebounded to shoot par on the back nine. Each of them had a birdie, seven pars and a bogey down the stretch.

Freshman Samantha Hutchison had two birdies on the back nine, was just 2 over on each side, and also posted a 75. She tied for 58th at 13 over. Virgie Velazquez finished with a 77, highlighting her day with a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole, and tied for 83rd at 28 over. Alexandra Zeng, competing as an individual, birdied the par-3 eighth and shot 76 while placing 86th.

UC Davis, which also played events this fall at New Mexico, Wisconsin and Northwestern against some of the nation's top teams, will start its spring season where it ended the fall - at Stanford. The Aggies will play the Peg Barnard Invitational on Feb. 13-14.
