STOCKTON, Calif. - Danielle Koehne and Jamie Garcia each scored in Sunday's America East Conference match at Pacific Field Hockey Turf to pull UC Davis within one goal with less than 15 minutes to play, but Pacific doubled its lead in the final minutes to pull away and defeat the Aggies by a 4-2 score.
In a match where 42 combined shots were recorded, junior goalkeeper Erica Cohen finished with 12 saves, the fifth-highest single-game total in program history, to etch her name in the Aggies' records book.
Before Sunday's league contest, former Aggie Lauren Sawvelle held all top-10 single-game saves total.
UC Davis will head to Stanford for its final road match of the season with a 7-10 overall and 0-4 America East record. Pacific is now 9-6 overall and 3-1 against conference foes.
Even though Pacific jumped out to a 2-0 lead 13 minutes into the match, UC Davis trimmed its deficit to one on the final plays of the first half.
With no time remaining on the scoreboard, the Aggies drew a penalty corner to extend play before halftime. All Pacific needed to do was control the ball, or knock the ball out of its scoring arc to officially end the half with a two-goal lead. Instead, UC Davis' aggressiveness helped draw three penalty corners, with nothing but zeros reflected on the scoreboard the entire time.
On the last of these corners, Garcia's shot was blocked; Koehne gained possession of this loose ball and scored her second goal of the season - and her career - with her sharp-angled shot that flew over Tigers goalkeeper Laura Pujade.
Pujade, who was still sprawled across the turf after stopping Garcia's initial shot, had zero chance of blocking Koehne's attempt.
Once play resumed in the second half, the Aggies' deficit bounced back to a two-goal margin after the Tigers scored in the 39th minute to take a 3-1 lead.
Undaunted, UC Davis pushed the pace of play while on offense, and pressured Pacific whenever the Tigers entered its third of the turf. Due to this combination, the Aggies created another successful scoring opportunity - one that was punctuated by Garcia's goal in the 57th minute.
As was the case earlier in the match, this goal also started on a penalty corner - one of 12 drawn by UC Davis throughout the day.
Earning assists on Garcia's team-high seventh goal of the season were Eden Borsack and Hannah Drawbridge.
If Garcia is able to score another goal before the end of the season, she will tie a single-season program-high total set by Nadia Namdari in 2010, and matched by Cloey LemMon in 2012.
Each player scored eight goals in their respective season.
As the second half progressed, the Aggies kept attacking the Tigers' cage in an attempt to score the game-tying goal.
Garcia led a contingent of Aggie attackers with a game-high seven shots, followed by Agustina Singh who posted five swings, Koehne and Kayla Wigney who each recorded three, followed by Kate Young who took one shot of her own.
Even though UC Davis played a man down for two minutes due to a green card penalty, earned another penalty corner and added another shot to its total after the team sliced its deficit back to one goal, Pacific all but officially earned the victory after scoring its fourth goal. By doing so, the Aggies faced another two-goal deficit with 63 seconds remaining in the match.
UC Davis pulled its goalie and added an extra attacker once play resumed, but its final two shots were turned away by Pujade as the final horn sounded.
