DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore Miguel Acevedo's first career goal gave his team the early lead, and the host Aggies had the potential game-winner waved off in early in the second overtime period, as they battled Causeway rival Sacramento State to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon in front of a season-high 962 fans at the Aggie Soccer Field.

Playing in its fourth consecutive overtime match, UC Davis moved to 7-6-2 overall on the season and 3-1-2 in Big West Conference play, improving its unbeaten streak to four (2-0-2) with the draw. The Hornets moved to 5-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play with Saturday's tie.

"It's always disappointing when you think you've won a game and, then, you didn't, but it's part of the game and we'll move on," Head Coach Dwayne Shaffer said. "Today, I felt like we had our opportunities to begin the game, especially in the first half, but to Sacramento State's credit they came back."

The two teams played to overtime for the third consecutive meeting -- and ended in a draw for the second time -- after the two programs played just one extra-time contest from 1990-2013.

A physical and tightly contested match featuring 27 combined fouls and three cards almost came to an end just two-and-a-half minutes into the second overtime as a long throw-in by Greg Salazar was headed home by Lucas Mohageg that looked like it had ended the match as UC Davis rushed the field. However, the officials whistled the Aggies offsides in the box and, after consultation, waved off the goal, keeping it a 1-1 contest with 7:35 remaining.

It would have been the Aggies' third straight overtime win -- all of those coming on game-winners by Mohageg. However, both defenses stiffened and closed out the match allowing just one shot -- an attempt by UC Davis' Connor Willis-Hong that missed wide in the 106th minute.

The Aggies controlled the run of play in the opening 45 minutes, out-shooting the Hornets by an 8-1 count, and finally breaking through in the 27th minute. Roy Boateng unleashed a shot that was saved by Sacramento State goalkeeper James Del Curto, but the Hornets could not clear the rebound away from danger as Acevedo made a run and punched it in from the left side for the 1-0 advantage.

Acevedo became the 12th Aggie to find the back of the net this season, while Boateng tallied his first career assist after four goals, now ranking second on the team with nine points.

Boateng almost had the first goal of the match just minutes prior, as his headed at the right post somehow stayed out of the Sacramento State net, and was gobbled up by Del Curto before it could cross the line.

The Hornets responded with their goal just eight minutes into the second half, converting on only their second shot of the match to that point. Ivan Ramirez's cross from the right side across the goalmouth connected with Cylus Sandoval at the back post, and the sophomore punched it home for his third of the year.

UC Davis was inches away from the game-winner in regulation, but freshman Kristian Heptner's header in the 80th minute off a free kick by Ryan Gross from the left side of the 18 glanced off the left post and away from danger, preserving the tie and sending the match to overtime.

Mohageg finished with a match-high five shots as the Aggies out-shot the Hornets, 17-9, for the match and held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Kris Schultz finished with a pair of saves in 110 minutes, while Del Curto was busy for Sacramento State, making six stops.

"I thought we did really well, but scoring goals is the toughest part of the game," Shaffer said. "I'm happy with our group. We've been finding ways to score goals and, take away that opening weekend, we've been rolling. We're still in a good spot with a lot of soccer to be played."

UC Davis opens a three-match Big West road swing next Wednesday (Oct. 21) at No. 13 UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m., before returning to Northern California for the second meeting with the Hornets on Saturday (Oct. 24) at 3 p.m. in Sacramento.
