Aggies' five-game win streak snapped at Hawai'i

HONOLULU - Corey Hawkins led all Aggies in scoring by hitting five threes and all four free throw opportunities in front of 5,739 fans who attended Saturday night's Big West Conference game in Honolulu, but UC Davis became the 11th team out of the 14 that have visited the Stan Sheriff Center this season to suffer a loss after falling to Hawai'i, 84-76.

In addition to Hawkins' 19, J.T. Adenrele, Avery Johnson, Josh Ritchart and Tyler Les all added nine points apiece. Josh Fox ended his evening with a team-high seven rebounds while the trio of Johnson, Hawkins and Darius Graham all finished with a team-high four assists.

UC Davis, which entered with a five-game win streak will return home, after playing its last three league matchups on the road, with a 14-4 overall record and a 4-1 league mark. Hawai'i is now 14-6 and 2-2 against Big West opponents.

"Hawai'i was extremely aggressive from the start, said head coach Jim Les following the game. "Early on, we were able to handle that aggressiveness really well, but for whatever reason, we made some decisions that were out-of-character.

"They made some threes, I can live with that because a team can get hot on occasion. But it was the 38 points scored off our turnovers, with most of those ending with layups, made it difficult to come-from-behind on the road."

Down by as many as 26, UC Davis stormed back in the second half by scoring 24 of the game's final 30 points throughout the final 8:08 of action. But the Aggies simply ran out of time after chopping 18 points off Hawai'i's game-high lead.

UC Davis shot .523 overall (23-for-44), .600 from three (9-for-15) and .840 from the stripe (21-for-25) - percentages that are strong enough to record a victory on most nights.

Even though they won the game, the Rainbow Warriors posted lower shooting percentages across the board. Compared to the Aggies, the Rainbow Warriors' numbers looked like this: .508 from the floor (30-for-59) , .455 from distance (10-for-22) and .824 from the line (14-for-17) .

A 19-3, Rainbow Warrior scoring run that took place in the minutes leading up to halftime, and another 10-0 run midway through the second half helped Hawai'i build its biggest lead. Those runs, combined with a season-high 24 UC Davis turnovers, ultimately created a deficit too big for the Aggies to erase.

"We fell back on our heels, they made their runs and we were just unable to come back from (our deficit)," added Les.

Aaron Valdez led Hawai'i with a game-high 21 points, Stefan Jankovic and Mike Thomas each chipped in with 13.

UC Davis now has an opportunity to set a new program high in front of its fans starting with Thursday's 7 p.m. game against UC Santa Barbara. The Aggies' next win will bump its overall total to 15 - the most ever recorded in the program's Division I history.
