ST. LOUIS - Even though Saint Louis was efficient, the team scored on its only shot, UC Davis was simply too much for the Billikens to handle as the Aggies dominated Saturday's non-conference match from Soccer Park in St. Louis to earn a 3-1 win.
The first victory of the season, and the Tiffany Huisman era, improves UC Davis' record to 1-2. Saint Louis slips to 0-3 with the result.
In a contest that saw UC Davis outshoot its opponent by a 19-1 margin, Saint Louis made the most of its lone attempt on goal when Maya Bently helped the Billikens take an early 1-0 lead.
Eleven minutes later Jamie Garcia capitalized on one of the Aggies' 10 penalty corners when her shot beat Megan Depew-Brady to tie the match at one apiece.
The goal was Garcia's second of the season.
Compared to the Aggies who drew six corners in the first half, and another four in the second, Saint Louis did not take one for the entire afternoon.
Tied at one apiece at halftime, UC Davis fired a barrage of shots at Saint Louis' cage throughout the following 35 minutes when action resumed. Even though Depew-Brady collected seven of her nine saves in the second half, she still let two slip past her.
Responsible for the game-winning goal, Stephie Sabraw the first game-winning goal of her career by outhustling Saint Louis' defenders, and Depew-Brady, on a shot from her teammate Garcia. By collecting a rebound off one of Garcia's game-high eight shots, Sabraw's only shot of the afternoon gave UC Davis the lead for good.
As was the case with UC Davis' first goal, Garcia scored the team's final goal off a penalty corner; recording her second goal one of her game-high four shots on goal on the play, the Aggies doubled their lead to a 3-1 margin, an advantage that became final 20 minutes later.
Assisting on both Garcia goals were Kayla Wigney and Hannah Drawbridge. Wigney's assists were the first earned as an Aggie, Drawbridge nearly matched her total from 2013 in one afternoon.
Last year, Drawbridge set up three UC Davis goals.
The third of four straight matches away from Davis will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday morning when the Aggies square off against the Indiana Hoosiers. A live stats link for that contest is available at ucdavisaggies.com.
