Aggies advance to East/West Match Play Finals

Sept. 21, 2014

Results (stroke play, Saturday) | Live scoring (match play, Sunday-Monday)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Seniors Blair Lewis and Beverly Vatananugulkit along with junior Andrea Wong, each won their matches on Sunday morning to lift second-seeded UC Davis to a 3-2 win over third-seeded Wisconsin in the championship semifinals of the inaugural East & West Match Play Challenge at the University of Michigan.
The victory came in the first-ever match play competition for UC Davis since it began NCAA Div. I competition in 2005. Sunday's play is part of a three-day tournament, co-hosted by Michigan and Wisconsin, that emulates changes to the NCAA Finals that will debut next May. The eight participating teams competed in stroke play on Saturday before starting two rounds of match play on Sunday.
UC Davis will face fourth-seeded SMU for the tournament championship on Monday after the Mustangs upset top-seeded Ohio State, 3-2. The Buckeyes and Wisconsin will play for third place.
"Today was a really fun day of competition," said Aggie coach Anna Temple. "The strategies for match play are so unique. It was great for us to see this format in the team setting. Wisconsin was a strong opponent and our players really stepped up and finished their matches well. We are really looking forward to our match against SMU and having another opportunity for great competition."
Wong, who claimed medalist honors during stroke competition on Saturday with a 4-under score, was a decisive 5&3 winner the Badgers' Aaren Ziegler. She trailed by a hole early but then squared it after the second hole. Back-to-back birdies on the next two holes put her up two and she led the rest of the way. Wong clinched her match with a par on the par-3 15th.
Lewis trailed her matchup to Aya Johnson after seven holes before squaring it with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. The match was tied after 11 holes but Lewis captured the next two to gain space. Johnson's par on the 15th hole brought her within one but each player had pars over the remaining three holes to give Lewis the win.
Vatananugulkit jumped out two a quick two-hole lead over Brooke Ferrell in her match before Ferrell knotted things after six holes. Vatananugulkit's par on the the seventh hole put her in the lead for good. She made it a two-hole lead after 11 and didn't let Ferrell get closer than that the rest of the way.
Sophomore Paige Lee was defeated by Gabby Curtis, 2&1, while junior Betty Chen lost to Kimberly Dinh, 3&2. Both Aggies held early leads before falling. Lee cut a four-hole deficit after 11 holes to two with two holes to play while Chen was tied at her turn before Dinh pulled away.
Miami defeated Michigan, 4-1, and Purdue beat Iowa, 3-2, in the consolation semifinals.
