Men's hoops answers the challenge; Extends it overseas

Aug. 20, 2014

DAVIS, Calif. - The #ALSIceBucketChallenge, a fundraising campaign for the ALS Association that has gone viral on social media, reached the men's basketball program when head coach Jim Les became the first member of his staff to participate.

So what is the #ALSIceBucketChallenge? This event involves people being doused with a bucket of ice water on video, sharing that video on Facebook, Twitter or other social media outlets, then challenging others to participate in an attempt to raise ALS awareness. If anyone who is challenged refuses to participate, those individuals are asked to make a donation to an ALS charity of their choice.

Upon receiving the news, men's basketball assistant coaches Kevin Nosek, Chris Davis, Kyle Vogt and Mark Darnall, director of operations, chose to meet their frigid fate.

Ryan Sypkens, Jason Rabedeaux, Paolo Mancasola, Mark Payne and Dan Yoshikawa, former Aggies who are currently competing or coaching abroad, were among the list of individuals current staff members called out.

More commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

As of Tuesday, Aug. 19, the ALS Association received over $22.9 million in donations over the last three weeks - primarily due to the skyrocketing popularity of this social media campaign. Compared to the exact same timeframe last season (July 29-Aug. 19), the organization received $1.9 million in donations.
