San Francisco Slips Past UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - Thanks to two UC Davis doubles victories in Saturday's dual against the visiting San Francisco Dons, the Aggies entered the round of singles with a 1-0 advantage. Unfortunately, San Francisco captured four of six individual matchups to leave the Marya Welch Tennis Center with a 4-3 win.

UC Davis will enter Sunday morning's Causeway Cup matchup, also taking place at the Marya Welch Tennis Center, with a 3-5 record. San Francisco improves to 7-2 with the result.

After Meghan Heneghan and Melissa Kobayakawa downed USF's Brooke Irish and Milica Hadzi-Tanovic 8-2, the Dons recorded their first double victory to even the round at one apiece.

In the decisive doubles contest Layla Sanders and Nicole Koehly emerged with a, 8-7 triumph after winning their doubleheader by a 7-5 margin.

San Francisco posted its first two team points before Kobayakawa evened the overall score at 2-2, by defeating Hadzi-Tanovic in their one-on-one battle, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

Heneghan, who teamed with Kobayakawa earlier in the day to record her first victory, also ended singles action in a similar way to her partner with a straight-set win that also included a tiebreak situation.

The Aggie senior defeated the Dons' Thyra Taune 6-3, 7-6 (5) to accomplish something her USF counterpart couldn't on the day-an individual sweep.

Kobayakawa, who also swept both matches played, and Heneghan were responsible for UC Davis' final team points as San Francisco took the final two singles contests to escape Davis with a come-from-behind victory.

Victorious in its matchup last season at Sacramento State, this year's Causeway Cup matchup will take place in Davis and start at 11 a.m.
