RIVERSIDE, Calif. - What started with three doubles victories in Sunday's Big West Match from the SRC Tennis Courts in Riverside, Calif., continued with all six singles matches, enabling UC Davis to record a 7-0 sweep over the UC Riverside Highlanders.
By earning its first league victory of 2014, UC Davis improves to 3-4 overall and 1-1 against conference opponents. The loss pushes UC Riverside to 0-8 and 0-2 respectively.
The Aggies' clean sheet is falls nine days shy of its last regular season shutout victory, recorded in Davis against Weber State on Feb. 25, 2012.
Tiffany Pham and Samantha Martino started UC Davis' streak of success by posting an 8-1 victory over Kate Bergeson and Thanh Doan at the No. 3 spot. Megan Heneghan and Melissa Kobayakawa followed suit with their No. 2 doubles win, against Tiffany Jue and Sophie El-Kara by a similar score.
Even though the Aggies secured the doubles point, a sweep of that round's action became official once Layla Sanders and Nicole Koehly downed Jasmine Almaguer and Courtney Pattugalan 8-4, in a battle of each school's top team.
Kamila Kecki, the first Aggie to finish her singles match, was one of two players to record a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over her opponent; Frederique Sleiffer was the other as each earned victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions over El-Kara and Doan.
Competing at No. 3, Kobayakawa nearly recorded a shutout of her own against Bergeson, defeating her opponent by a 6-3, 6-0 score. Koehly, the next to finish, allowed Pattugalan to score only one game in each set in her 6-1, 6-1 win.
Even though UC Davis was the official victor, at that point, the final two singles matchups played to completion since Sunday's dual was a league event. Pham and Heneghan ended the Aggies' afternoon by defeating Jue, 6-0, 6-1, and Almaguer, 6-3, 6-2 to post UC Davis' second straight shutout over the Highlanders.
All six singles matches were captured by the Aggies in straight set fashion.
At last year's Big West Women's Tennis Championships, these two teams squared off against one another in the first round, a matchup the Aggies' took by a 4-0 score.
Starting with Saturday's dual versus San Francisco, a match that was originally scheduled earlier this month and postponed due to rain, UC Davis' next two games will take place at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies will conclude this week's schedule Sunday afternoon, against Sacramento State, in this year's Causeway Cup battle.
