DAVIS, Calif. -- For the second time this weekend, junior catcher Izaak Silva came through with the big hit, as his two-run single in the sixth capped a UC Davis rally from four runs down, but Seattle responded by sending 16 batters to plate a half an inning later to lift the visiting Redhawks to a 17-5 win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 1-3 overall to start the season while Seattle improved to 3-1, taking the final two games of the four-game set in Northern California.
After surrendering four runs in the first two innings, the UC Davis offense caught fire, scoring five unanswered runs in the middle three innings to take their first lead of the day. Senior Steven Patterson broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off single in the fourth and, after a fielder's choice by sophomore Cameron Olson allowed him to reach base, junior Austin March put a charge into an 0-1 offering from starter Mac Acker (1-0) and deposited it over the right field fence for his first home run of the year to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Silva led-off the Aggies' half of the fifth with a single and moved to second when the left fielder couldn't handle the ball cleanly to put a runner in scoring position. Junior Evan Heptig sacrificed him to third to bring up junior Tino Lipson, who lofted a fly ball into left, deep enough to plate Silva and make it 4-3. However, the Soquel, Calif., native wasn't done, rallying UC Davis to the front of the pack in the sixth with his second hit of the day.
Olson singled back through the box to lead-off the frame and moved to second three batters later when freshman Mason Novak drew a two-out walk to bring up Silva. Down to his last strike, Silva lined a shot down the right-field line that ricocheted off the outfield fence -- a fair ball by mere inches -- scoring both of his teammates for a 5-4 advantage.
However, that lead would be short-lived as Seattle opened the flood gates in the seventh innings to take complete control of the contest. Brian Olson's two-run, bases-loaded double to left field plated the tying and go-ahead runs and the Redhawks were off to the races. Brock Carpenter added a three-run, bases-clearing double later in the inning, and Olson added another three-run double with two outs for the key hits in an 11-run frame against four UC Davis pitchers as Seattle never looked back.
Single runs in the eighth and ninth capped the scoring for the Redhawks, who banged out 15 hits. Acker allowed five runs on six hits in six innings of work, striking out five en route to the win for Seattle. Reliever Robert Parucha (0-1) suffered the loss, charged with four runs on one hit in one-third of an inning as the Aggies were unable to overcome 11 walks as a staff. Starter Max Cordy was stuck with the no decision, allowing three earned on three hits while striking out five in four innings of work.
Silva accounted for two of the team's seven hits on the day while Cameron Olson scored a pair of runs for UC Davis while finishing 1-for-4 at the plate. Seth Batty who, along with March had hits in all four games of the series, finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks on the day.
Four Redhawks finished with multiple hits on the day, including Cullen Hendrickson, who was 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored, and three RBIs, and Brian Olson, who was 2-for-6 with his five, seventh-inning RBIs.
Following their only home appearance until mid-March, the Aggies take to the road for their next 12 games, beginning next weekend in Moraga, Calif., for the Gael Invitational hosted by Saint Mary's. UC Davis opens on Thursday (Feb. 20) at 2 p.m. against the host Gaels before taking on Portland on Friday (Feb. 21) at 10 a.m., Kansas State on Saturday (Feb. 22) at 10 a.m., and the Pilots, once again, on Sunday (Feb. 23), at 2 p.m.
