Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis junior Kevin Barker finished 2-for-3 while senior Seth Batty doubled and scored a run, but the Aggies offense couldn't muster much more off Seattle starter Connor Moore, who allowed just three hits and struck out six in seven innings to help the Redhawks to a 2-1 win on Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The contest was the 2014 season opener for both teams, who combined for just eight hits in a pitchers duel that was scoreless into the sixth.

UC Davis senior right-hander Harry Stanwyck (0-1) was solid in his opening day start, allowing one run on three hits and working around three walks in 5 1/3 innings of work. Robert Parucha entered in relief and gave up just an unearned run on one hit, striking out a pair.

Moore (1-0) threw just 79 pitches and faced four over the minimum in the win for Seattle, retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced and striking out the side in the sixth. Garrett Anderson struck out two in his only inning of work to set up Will Dennis, who allowed Batty's double and balked him home for the Aggies' lone run in the ninth, before shutting the door for his first save of the season.

Scoreless after five, the Redhawks finally broke the seal in the sixth, loading the bases on a hit batter, infield single, and an error, for designated hitter Michael McCann, who lofted a ball deep enough to left to score Cullen Hendrickson for the 1-0 lead and chase Stanwyck from the game. Parucha entered and put out the fire, getting a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.

Seattle added its second run in the seventh as a lead-off error came back to bite UC Davis as a double by Hendrickson after, what should have been, an inning-ending fly ball scored Ryan Somers for the 2-0 advantage. Parucha set the side down with another fly ball to end the inning and retired the final seven batters he faced to keep the Aggies within striking distance.

That set the stage for a UC Davis rally in the ninth as Batty led off with his double that hugged the right field line and moved to third on a ground out by Steven Patterson. With Nick Lynch up, Batty would then be awarded home plate on a balk call against Dennis to end the shutout bid. Dennis, however, worked away from any further damage, getting a fly ball and a strikeout to end the game.

The top of the order for Seattle accounted for three of the Redhawks' four hits with Chase Fields, Hendrickson, Grant Newton, and Brock Carpenter each collecting hits on the day. March singled in the fifth to join Batty and Barker with hits for the Aggies.

UC Davis and Seattle continue their four-game series on Saturday (Feb. 15) with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Dobbins Stadium.
