GREELEY, Colo. - Led by the senior trio of Josh Ritchart, Corey Hawkins and Tyler Les, UC Davis was responsible for giving another opponent its first home loss of the season when the Aggies departed the Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, Colo., with a 73-63 victory over Northern Colorado.
With the win, UC Davis improves to 9-1, matching the best 10-game start in the 104-year history of the program. The 1997-98 Division II national championship-winning team is the only other squad to accomplish this impressive feat
Northern Colorado entered Monday night's matchup with wins in its last 14 straight home contests, including all five played this season, and will now enter its league-opener with a 5-6 record.
The victory also extended UC Davis' win streak against the Bears to five.
"That was another gutty performance tonight. These guys had a lot of opportunities to give in playing another game at altitude, but they dug deep. This is a great Christmas gift," said UC Davis head coach Jim Les.
Responsible for nine of his team's first 12 points, Ritchart led all players with 20 and was one of two Aggies to record a game-high seven rebounds. Both totals are one shy of his respective season-highs of 21 and eight, both set against San José State on Dec. 3.
"We asked Josh to become more aggressive and he stepped up on both ends.
"When you play as well on defense as this team did tonight, opportunities on offense will create themselves. This was a complete team effort," said Les.
Hawkins added another 18 points and tied a season high by also finishing with seven rebounds. Les, who drained three of his four field goals from three, set a season high of his own by ending the evening with 11 points.
Outside of the opening 1:45 of game time before Ritchart scored the first points by either team, and another 52 seconds of action in the second half when the score was tied on two occasions, UC Davis led the entire evening.
From the opening tip, to the final buzzer, the Aggies dominated the glass on both ends of the court. In addition to its 10 offensive rebounds, UC Davis grabbed another 31 on defense to set a new season high.
Including Josh Fox's 11 points, UC Davis' reserves out-scored the Bears' bench by a 42-27 margin to set another season-high mark.
Jordan Wilson led all Bears with 15 points and was one of three players to score double digits.
The Aggies will make their first appearance on national television (Pac-12 Networks), and continue its season-long four-game road swing on Dec. 28 at Washington State.
