Official Big West release
IRVINE, Calif. - Buoyed by a championship from women's cross country, a second-place in the North Division by men's soccer, and a third-place tie in the conference by women's volleyball, UC Davis is in third place after the fall season in the race for the 2014-15 Big West Commissioner's Cup, it was announced on Tuesday.
Points for the Commissioner's Cup are awarded to teams based upon Big West finishes and the number of schools participating in that sport. Institutional totals are then divided by the number of sports they participated in to arrive at a school's average score which is then ranked.
The Aggies, who scored 560 points over five sports, posted a 112.0 average and trail only leader Long Beach State (125.0) and UC Santa Barbara (116.0), which is second. Cal Poly (110.0) and UC Riverside (102.0) round out the top five.
UC Davis was led by its women's cross country team which won the Big West title for the second time. The Aggies dominated the competition by scoring just 36 points, well ahead of runner-up UCSB (66). The win netted UC Davis the maximum 200 points possible toward the Commissioner's Cup.
Men's soccer team picked up 110 points after taking second in the Big West North Division and sharing third- and fourth-place points with UC Irvine which was second in the South Division. The Aggies finished 5-3-2 in the league and 7-4-9 overall.
Women's volleyball brought in 130 points after tying with CSUN in the standings at 10-6 and splitting third- and fourth-place points with the Matadors. UC Davis was the surprise team in the Big West this season after being picked to finish seventh in the conference's preseason poll but moving into the upper half of the league at season's end. The Aggies were 15-14 overall.
UC Davis picked up its other sports during the fall from women's soccer and men's cross country, which each scored 60 points.
Seven of the nine schools offered the full complement of five Big West sports in the fall. Long Beach State participated in four while Hawai'i competed in three.
