Hawkins named Big West Player of the Week

Nov. 24, 2014

IRVINE, Calif. - Senior guard Corey Hawkins is the first Aggie to receive Player of the Week accolades from the Big West this season after leading his team to consecutive road victories.

Responsible for more than 40 percent of his team's offense - he scored a combined 49 of UC Davis' 118 points - Hawkins helped the Aggies defeat Eastern Illinois and Furman to preserve their first-place standing as the league's only undefeated team.

Last week's results also marked the first time that UC Davis collected consecutive road wins since March of 2013 when men's basketball ended its league slate by defeating UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.

The 6-foot-3 guard led all Aggies with 28 points at Eastern Illinois and 21 against Furman to help UC Davis start its season with a 3-0 record for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign.

Against the Panthers, Hawkins finished 9 of 16 from the field, connected on 5 of 7 shots from three and scored the Aggies' final five points in their two-point win. Two days later, Hawkins' clutch free throw with five seconds remaining extended his team's lead to three, forcing the Paladins (who had zero timeouts remaining) to travel from one end of the court to the other before heaving a desperation three-point shot to force overtime - an attempt that landed nowhere near its intended target.

For the week, Hawkins shot 17-for-30 (.567 pct.) overall and 9-for-14 (.643 pct.) from three, averaged 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Monday's announcement marks the third time that league named Hawkins as its Player of the Week. The Goodyear, Arizona native received his first award following a 40-point performance at Hawai'i (1/19/13). That evening, Hawkins broke a 34-year-old UC Davis single-game scoring record on 10 of 14 shooting, tied another school record (at that time) for the most three-point field goals made in a single game and matched another all-time record for the most threes recorded by a Rainbow Warrior opponent.

One month later, the Big West bestowed its second weekly honor to Hawkins after he scored one-third of the Aggies' combined points in home victories versus CSUN and Hawai'i.

UC Davis will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 26, when Utah State visits the Pavilion in the first of a three-game homestand. That all-Aggie matchup is slated to start at 7 p.m.
