Hawkins selected to Big West's preseason team

Oct. 23, 2014

IRVINE, Calif. - Media outlets that cover the Big West's nine men's basketball programs selected senior guard Corey Hawkins to the league's Preseason All-Conference Team as release by the conference on Thursday.

This is the second preseason honor collected by Hawkins; NBC Sports also added the native of Goodyear, Arizona to its all-conference squad.

The Lou Henson Mid-Major All-American, two-time all-conference recipient, 2012-13 Big West Newcomer of the Year and scoring champion, was the only Aggie to start every game played last season. Throughout his 30 appearances, Hawkins averaged a team-high 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

Even though opposing teams specifically drafted their game plans around Hawkins due to the slew of games missed by the Aggies last season via redshirt or injuries, he was still able to post top 10 league averages.

In addition to posting the third-highest scoring figure among all Big West players (missing the second spot by only one-tenth of a point), he led the league in steals, averaging 1.47 per game, and finished his junior season ranked No. 6 in free throw percentage (.757) and No. 9 in assists (2.97).

As a junior, Hawkins ended his season ranked No. 57 among all Division I players across the nation in free throws made (159), No. 85 in scoring, No. 98 in total points (539).

It took just 53 games for Hawkins to become the 20th member of UC Davis men's basketball's 1,000 career point club - an accomplishment that took place midway through the Aggies' conference slate last season. Since becoming a Division I program, no UC Davis player has reached this milestone faster than Hawkins.

Joining Hawkins on the BWC's Preseason All-Conference Team are Mike Caffey (Long Beach State), Isaac Fotu (Hawai'i), Stephen Maxwell (CSUN), Mamadou Ndiaye (UC Irvine) and Alan Williams (UC Santa Barbara).

UC Davis will open its season inside the Pavilion on Sunday, Nov. 16, against Holy Names. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
