Fipps honored, Aggies picked fourth

Oct. 22, 2014

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior forward Sydnee Fipps was one of six players honored on the preseason All-Big West Conference team while she and her Aggie teammates were picked to finish fourth in the race for the league title according to a vote of media members released on Wednesday afternoon.

A senior-laden preseason all-conference team included Fipps, Cal Poly's Ariana Elegado, Hawaii's Shawna-Lei Kuehu, and CSUN duo Ashlee Guay and Janae Sharpe, along with UC Riverside junior Brittany Crain. The group includes four of the league's top six scorers from a season ago

Fipps, who has already earned preseason All-Big West and All-Mid Major laurels from College Sports Madness, averaged a career-best 17.7 ppg to rank third in the league en route to her second consecutive All-Big West First Team honor as a junior.

Featuring an experienced lineup that features five returning starters, 10 returning letter winners, and five newcomers, UC Davis received 83 points to place fourth in the poll behind the Matadors, Rainbow Wahine, and Mustangs. CSUN, which also returns all five starters, swept both the regular season and tournament titles in 2013-14 and received all but one of the first-place nods from the voters.

UC Davis finished 15-16 overall and 9-7 in the Big West last season, reaching the quarterfinals of the league tournament thanks to a late-season run that saw the Aggies win four of their final five regular season contests and win their tournament opener over UC Santa Barbara.

Fipps is joined in the front court by returning starters Alyson Doherty (13.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, .557 field goal percentage) -- a second-team All-Big West selection last season -- and Celia Marfone (7.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg, .433 field goal percentage), while junior Molly Greubel and sharp-shooting senior Kelsey Harris return at the guard positions. Greubel led the team in assists -- including a school-record single-game high of 14 against UC Irvine on Feb. 8 -- while Harris sank a school single-season record 86 three-pointers en route to an average of 10.7 ppg.

The 2014-15 schedule opens on Nov. 7 with an exhibition against Sonoma State at 7 p.m. at The Pavilion before officially lifting the lid on the regular season against nine-time defending national champion, and USA Today coaches poll preseason No. 1, Connecticut on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

Season and single-game tickets for the 15-game women's basketball home schedule are on sale now. For more information visit the tickets page online at UCDavisAggies.com.
