Oct. 17, 2014 DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior forward
Sydnee Fipps and junior center
Alyson Doherty were among a group of 10 players named to the preseason All-Big West Conference First Team according to the website College Sports Madness.
A season after earning All-Big West first- and second-team honors, respectively, Fipps and Doherty joined CSUN's Ashlee Guay, Cal Poly's Ariana Elegado, and UC Riverside's Brittany Crain on the first team. Cal State Fullerton's Chante Miles and Kathleen Iwuoha, the Matadors' Janae Sharpe, Long Beach State's Lauren Spargo, and Hawai'i Destiny King, make up the second team.
Fipps was named to the all-conference first team for the second straight season in 2014, joining former Aggie great Paige Mintun as the only UC Davis players to have earned multiple first-team honors from the Big West. She ranked third in the league in scoring (17.7 ppg), and among the top 15 in four other offensive categories, while becoming the 16th player -- and only the third junior -- to reach 1,000 career points.
She reached double figures in all but three of her 31 starts, including 16 games of 20-or-more points, and set a season high with 25 points at Pacific.
Doherty appeared in 27 games, making 25 starts, as a sophomore, finishing the year second on the team in scoring (13.1 ppg) and tops at 6.3 rpg -- both among the top 15 in the Big West. The Lake Forest, California, native led the conference with a .557 field goal percentage (which also ranks fifth on the UC Davis single-season list) and reached double figures in 21 of her 27 contests, including a career-high 24 points at Hofstra on Dec. 7.
The Aggies open their 2014-15 schedule on Nov. 7 with an exhibition against Sonoma State at 7 p.m. at The Pavilion before officially lifting the lid on the regular season against nine-time defending national champion, and USA Today coaches poll preseason No. 1, Connecticut on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
